The Batgirl star reveals her new comic-accurate super suit, but adds on to the display by referencing one of Barbara Gordon’s defining titles.
Leslie Grace shares a quote from a comic she’s used as research to prepare for her role in Batgirl.
The actor, who stars as the titular crimefighter, shared the quote alongside a first look at her costume on Twitter. The post’s caption reads, “‘I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts,'” The dialogue originates from Batgirl: Year One, a limited series that ran for nine issues from late 2002 through 2003.

Written by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon and illustrated by Marcos Martín, Batgirl: Year One was a retelling of Barbara Gordon’s origin story from a more modern perspective than her 1967 comics debut. The story saw Barbara struggle against her overprotective father and systemic prejudices as she tried to prove herself a hero to Batman, Robin and the whole of Gotham City. The series received praise for its dynamic artwork and for grounding Batgirl’s story without losing sight of what made the character so compelling and unique.
This isn’t the first instance of the Batgirl film taking inspiration from Year One. The main villains of the miniseries were the bug-themed baddies Killer Moth and Firefly, who teamed up to get revenge on Gotham’s protectors and Batgirl in particular. In October, it was confirmed that Brendan Fraser will play Firefly after being seen in costume for the film on the actor’s birthday. Named Garfield Lynns, Firefly is a special effects artist and pyromaniac who saw supervillainy as an outlet for his sadistic tendencies, using a jetpack and a flamethrower to terrorize Gotham City. Early casting reports described the villain as “a disgruntled former firefighter,” similar to his appearance in the first season of Arrow.
Joining Grace and Fraser in Batgirl will be J.K. Simmons reprising his Justice League role as Barbara’s father, Commissioner Jim Gordon. Additionally, it has been confirmed that Michael Keaton will return as Batman in the film, having previously played the character in 1989’s Batman, the sequel Batman Returns and is set to reprise it in the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie The Flash. There’s also a rumor circulating that Batgirl has already cast Dick Grayson aka Nightwing, who had a major role in Year One as Barbara’s biggest supporter in her crime-fighting crusade. Given that set photos have already shown that Robin is a known figure in the movie, it’s possible that the Boy Wonder may be poised to join the DC Extended Universe.
Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script by Christina Hodson, Batgirl is scheduled for on HBO Max in 2022.
