J.K. Simmons hits the Gotham City streets in new set photos from HBO Max’s Batgirl film, which takes place within the DC Extended Universe.
J.K. Simmons is back on the streets as Commissioner Gordon in new photos from the set of HBO Max’s upcoming DC Extended Universe film Batgirl.
A Twitter user shared three photos — which come from Batgirl‘s Scotland set — earlier today. “It’s only J.K. Simmons filming the [Batgirl] movie in Glasgow today,” the caption reads. The first photo was apparently shot in between takes, with Simmons sporting both his Commissioner Gordon outfit and a KN95 face mask. Meanwhile, the remaining two photos show Gotham City taxis — one being a sedan and the other being an SUV.
In Batgirl, Simmons reprises his role as Gotham City Police Department Commissioner James Gordon from 2017’s Justice League and 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Of course, Commissioner Gordon is the father of the film’s main protagonist, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, played in the film by Leslie Grace.
Back in November, Simmons discussed returning as Commissioner Gordon in Batgirl during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor — who recently appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home for his sixth on-screen outing as Marvel’s J. Jonah Jameson (counting Venom: Let There Be Carnage) — said his DC character will have a “more significant” role this time around, and that he was “flabbergasted” Warner Bros. asked him to return.
In addition to Grace and Simmons, Batgirl stars Brendan Fraser as Firefly, the film’s main antagonist, and Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, Barbara’s best friend. Additionally, Jacob Scipio, Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson and Ethan Kai have been cast in undisclosed roles. Moreover, the HBO Max-exclusive release sees Batman and Batman Returns star Michael Keaton reprise his iconic role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Keaton will also reprise his role as Batman in the theatrically-released DCEU film The Flash, which is slated to premiere on Nov. 4.
Batgirl is expected to premiere on HBO Max sometime this year, but currently lacks a specific release date (though previously-released set photos suggest the film itself takes place in the winter, possibly during Christmas). The film is directed by the duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script by Christina Hodson. It is also rumored to set up HBO Max’s planned Black Canary solo film, which also spins out of the Birds of Prey movie.
Batgirl is slated to premiere exclusively on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
