Baby Yoda’s Lightsaber May Answer a Star Wars Question about Luke Skywalker

[ad_1]

Star Wars may have already answered where Luke got the yellow Kyber crystal that Grogu uses in Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

With the release of the “Size Matters Not” poster, it appears that Baby Yoda will have a yellow lightsaber in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. However, while the news is certainly cool and a big development for Grogu’s character, the inclusion of his yellow lightsaber kind of raises more questions than answers. When Season 3 comes out, it needs to address where the lightsaber came from, and the answer might come from Luke’s Jedi history.

Trends International released the poster in question as part of the Comic-Con@Home 2021. It shows Luke Skywalker alongside Grogu, his new Padawan. Luke is in his Jedi robes, levitating a glowing, yellow Kyber crystal, while Grogu is levitating various lightsaber parts. So, all indication is that Grogu will be wielding a yellow lightsaber come Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

The question then is where did that yellow saber come from because, in a post Jedi Purge galaxy, lightsabers were few and far between. The answer to that question might very well already have been given. Luke Skywalker briefly owned another lightsaber in between his blue and green ones. After losing the Skywalker legacy lightsaber and his hand on Bespin, Luke had a great many lesser-known adventures, and those stories have only been told in the comics.

In Star Wars 6, Luke Skywalker ventures to a Jedi outpost on the planet of Tempes. There he finds ancient artifacts and a new — wait for it — yellow lightsaber. Originally, the weapon had belonged to a Jedi Temple Guard, but this particular saber had only a single blade, unlike those depicted in the trilogy. While at the outpost, Luke used the lightsaber to fight and defeat the cursed spirit of the Grand Inquisitor.

By Return of the Jedi, though, the yellow lightsaber had disappeared, and Luke had constructed his own green-bladed weapon. The release of the “Size Matters Not” poster seems to indicate that Luke had kept the weapon or at least its yellow Kyber crystal. From there, it makes sense that he simply gifted the Kyber to his Baby Yoda. The problem is that, according to tradition, Jedi trainees have to find their own Kyber crystals. It’s a rite of passage that shows a trainee is ready to become a Jedi.

If this is true and Luke simply gave a crystal to Grogu, it would be kind of a disappointment not to see Baby Yoda’s quest to find his own crystal. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s not like Kyber crystals are as abundant as they once were after Palpatine gathered them up to fuel his Death Stars. So, if Luke had one lying around, it makes sense that he would give it to his apprentice. It also may not be the first time that something similar happened for Luke. Obi-Wan gave Luke his first lightsaber, and it has long been theorized that Luke’s green Kyber crystal was originally Qui-Gon’s. So, if Luke gives his old, yellow Kyber crystal to Grogu in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, it would simply be following tradition.

However, this also shows an incredible amount of hope on Luke’s part that he would trust Grogu with a Jedi’s weapon after he had been through so much trauma, experienced the dark side and even used it. This hope is indicative of Luke’s character at the time, but everyone knows that he is not the same Jedi by the sequel trilogy. Maybe some great tragedy befalls Baby Yoda, or maybe he fails as a Jedi. Something like that could go a long way toward explaining why Luke becomes the curmudgeon that he does.
