Avengers Teases the Marvel Multiverse’s Mysterious Guardian, Avenger Prime

In Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day special, Avengers just revealed that a mysterious lone hero stands watch over the entire Marvel Multiverse.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Free Comic Book Day Avengers/Hulk #1, available now from Marvel.

The Avengers are often referred to as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, the Marvel Multiverse is filled with infinite Earths, almost all of which seem to have their own version of the Avengers. Marvel just released a special Avengers story for this year’s Free Comic Book Day that may reveal the most powerful Avenger in all of the multiverse, a cosmic protector locked away in a distant world. But this individual, identified only as Avenger Prime, could possibly have a secret connection to an older version of the team.

The hidden base of Avenger Prime is seen in Free Comic Book Day Avengers/Hulk #1 by Jason Aaron, Iban Coello, Brian Reber and VC’s Cory Petit. Within a black hole at the nexus of all possible realities, there is a world known as the God Quarry. Its very soil is comprised of “rotting gods.”  In this world, there is a copy of Avengers Tower rising toward the sky. It was constructed by Avengers from across the multiverse, including numerous versions of Thor, Vision and Iron Man. Within it, a single Avenger stands guard. Known as Avenger Prime, this guardian sends out armies of undead cyborgs called Deathloks to travel to different universes and save them from reality-killing threats.

Avenger Prime is only shown in silhouette, so their exact identity is unclear. However, there has been at least one previous version of Avenger Prime, and they proved to be one of the most powerful and enigmatic entities ever to appear in the pages of Marvel Comics.

In 2014’s Mighty Avengers #14 by Al Ewing, Salvadore Larocca, Matt Milla and Cory Petit, the hero Luke Cage led his team of Avengers against a nigh-omnipotent evil entity known as the Deathwalker Prime. It was a magical monstrosity conjured forth by a cabal of black magic users called the Deathwalkers. The sorcerers performed a ritual with an artifact called the Talisman of Kamar-Taj, which let them all meld together, thereby becoming the Deathwalker Prime. This entity exerted control over reality and forced almost all of the heroes of the world to bow in submission as it assaulted them with nightmarish visions.

However, Luke Cage stood up to it, and with the help of an immortal mystic called Kaluu, the Avengers were also able to use the Talisman of Kamar-Taj to form a new entity, the Avenger Prime. This powerful being took the form of a towering humanoid and appeared to contain the star-studded darkness of a galaxy within its form. The Avenger Prime was able to defeat the Deathwalker Prime. Then, it vanished in a burst of light, leaving the individual members of the Avengers team standing in its place.

Considering that the first appearance of Avenger Prime involved the team melding together to form a new entity, this might also be the case with the new version of “Avenger Prime” who lives in the God Quarry. After all, the Avengers Towers of the realm was built by many different versions of Thor, Vision and Iron Man. It seems likely that they could have blended together into a heroic amalgamation, possibly pulling in the best versions of themselves from across all realities. If that’s the case, the best version of the Avengers team might not be an actual team, but rather a single entity composed of the multiverse’s mightiest heroes, all blended together to form a new heroic guardian.
