As World War She-Hulk explosively begins in Avengers, Jennifer Walters finds herself undergoing a shocking new transformation.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers #46, by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, David Curiel and VC’s Cory Petit, on sale now.
Jennifer Walters has had quite the superhero rollercoaster ride as of late with the drastic changes to her gamma-irradiated alter ego, She-Hulk. Enduring a near-death experience during the 2016 crossover event Civil War II, She-Hulk became more monstrously savage than usual, no longer completely in control of her faculties as she had been after first gaining her powers. And while She-Hulk was recently able to harness control of the Green Goliath, retaining her intellect and personality, a surprise betrayal and ambush at the Avengers headquarters has caused her to undergo a new transformation into Red She-Hulk in Avengers #46.
Following the Avengers’ incursion into Russia to deal with the civil war among the Marvel Universe’s vampire population, the Russian superhero team the Winter Guard swore revenge for this perceived violation of their national sovereignty. The Russian heroes took particular interest in She-Hulk who, then in her savage state, wrecked havoc in their country when unleashed upon the warring vampire factions. With Gorilla-Man positioned as an undercover double agent within the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Winter Guard struck, just as the Avengers were licking their wounds from the recent Heroes Reborn crossover event that saw them temporarily bested by the Squadron Supreme of America.
With the Avengers’ headquarters infected by a virus programmed by Gorilla-Man that targets its security system and Iron Man laid out by his simian betrayer, the Winter Guard strikes, catching the heroes completely off guard. Bound in chains, She-Hulk end up in the Red Room where Black Widow trained since an early age to become one of the most gifted super-spies in the history of the Soviet Union. While Jennifer appears to retain her mind under the intense pressures of the clandestine organization, she is shocked to discover that her formerly green skin color has been transformed bright red, signaling she may have been subjected to genetic experimentation while subdued.
The original Red Hulk was the alter ego of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the longtime antagonist of Bruce Banner. Ross secretly underwent a procedure by A.I.M. to transform into Red Hulk to finally overpower his nemesis, retaining his intellect and growing hotter the angrier he got; while the heat emanating off an enraged Red Hulk is particularly formidable, it also takes a physical toll on the creature. General Robert Maverick would later undergo a similar procedure to transform into the second Red Hulk while Ross’ daughter Betty would go on to become the Red She-Hulk for a time, opposing her father and going on to become a member of the Defenders.
It is currently unclear what procedure Jennifer Walters endured at the Red Room’s hands to transform into the latest Red She-Hulk and if this transformation bears the same physiological similarities as previous Red Hulks. More to the point, it is unknown if the combination of the gamma radiated blood flowing through Jennifer has a unique reaction to the Red Room procedures to transform into Red She-Hulk, similar to the Compound Hulk that briefly appeared when the classic Hulk and Red Hulk were combined.
With Red She-Hulk still under the mercy of the Winter Guard, it appears that Jennifer Walters may be forcibly turned against her old teammates as the Russian team’s latest recruit, the formidable Winter Hulk.
