Avengers: Mech Strike just showed how incredibly easy it could be for Kang to be an even bigger threat to the MCU than Thanos ever was.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers: Mech Strike #2, from Jed MacKay, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX, and Cory Petit, on sale now.
The Avengers are used to facing off against world-ending threats, but they have never come up against anything quite like what Kang the Conqueror has just unleashed on Earth. In the alternate reality of Avengers: Mech Strike, the time-traveling despot’s army of techno-organic monstrosities have ravaged the world, collapsing time in on itself and forcing the Avengers to seek help from Thanos. But as powerful as the Mad Titan is, he couldn’t hold his own against the Master of Time in this form, and their most recent encounter may have just set the precedent for how much damage Kang is poised to do to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Avengers have been fighting an uphill battle ever since Kang’s first massive beast reared its ugly head. While the younger version of Thanos they’re working with doesn’t know them, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes know what the Mad Titan is capable of all too well. Hoping that he might put that impossible strength to good use, the Avengers begrudgingly accepted him into their ranks.
But when Thanos finally found the opportunity to confront Kang directly, he also discovered what his new adversary was capable of in the worst way possible. Before Thanos could lay a hand on Kang, he was exposed to the full force of Kang’s might, and in an instant was thrust through the span of his entire life.
With almost no effort whatsoever, Kang reduced the MCU’s greatest villain to dust. Even though Kang was directly connected to the dormant Celestial that comprises Avengers Mountain at the time he killed Thanos, their battle is a clear indicator of just what Kang is prepared to bring along with his own introduction to the MCU.
Kang has lived by many names and ruled across multiple periods, but his control over time itself has never reached levels quite like this. Even with all of the time-traveling that has already been seen in the MCU courtesy of the Infinity Stones, no single figure has ever weaponized it to this degree, not even within the Time Variance Authority of Loki. It isn’t hard to imagine how this particular ability could be used to menace the MCU once Kang arrives in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Considering the fact that Loki‘s TVA might even be supplying Kang with resources already, he may not need to age anyone with his touch after all.
While the Mad Titan spent years as the primary antagonist of the MCU, Kang seems to be the perfect replacement for him in that role, and could very well prove himself to be an even greater threat. With any luck, the Avengers of the comics will find a way to stop him before their MCU counterparts have to do the same. If not for the sake of their world, then to at least prove it can be even done in the first place.
