Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of the coolest cartoons ever made, telling the story of Avatar Aang as he went on an epic quest to bring balance to the world. Along the way, he gained many enemies who tried to stop his heroic acts, and many of them came from the Fire Nation.
While some antagonists were only around for an episode or two and did not make much of an impact, there were others who were quite memorable due to how much of a threat they were to the Avatar. Who were Aang’s greatest enemies throughout the series?
10 Jet Was Friends With Aang Until He Attacked Innocent People
Jet originally seemed like a friend to Aang, and the two even teamed up for a while. However, while Aang would fight against members of the Fire Nation who threatened him or others, he would never attack innocent people. In Jet’s eyes, every firebender was an enemy, which also made Aang his enemy once Jet found out who he really was. The two eventually worked together again in Ba Sing Se, but they never got along the way they had when they first met.
9 Zuko Tried To Capture Aang Many Times Before Joining Forces With Him
While Zuko would eventually team up with Aang toward the end of the series, he was one of the Avatar’s greatest enemies before that. Feeling like it was his destiny to capture Aang, Zuko did just about everything he could to prove to his father that he was honorable. There were times where Zuko helped Aang, like when he freed him from Zhao, but it wouldn’t be until after he caused Aang and his friends so much harm that he proved he was loyal to them.
8 Mai Hunted Down Aang But Also Helped Him Out Sometimes
Mai was Zuko’s girlfriend, and like him, she chased after Aang throughout the series, working directly under Azula. She never became a close friend to Aang like Zuko did, but she also helped him out every once in a while.
There were times when she let the heroes get away, and she even betrayed the princess of the Fire Nation toward the end of the series. However, she didn’t actually care to capture Aang in the first place.
7 Ty Lee Was Loyal To The Fire Nation Before Becoming A Kyoshi Warrior
Ty Lee would often work with Mai as she was a childhood friend to both her and Azula. Though there were many times where she didn’t want to follow Azula’s orders, she proved her loyalty to the Fire Nation more than Mai did, making her a greater threat to the Avatar. Luckily, when the series ended, she became a member of the Kyoshi Warriors.
6 Combustion Man Tried To Assassinate The Avatar
Combustion Man was an assassin Zuko hired to kill Aang after he pretended he had already done so to make Ozai proud. Combustion Man hunted the Avatar and his friends down for a while. Because they didn’t know his name, “Combustion Man” is what Sokka decided to call him, and the rest of the team agreed. When Zuko decided to betray the Fire Nation, he tried to convince Combustion Man to stop, even offering to pay him more money if he let the Avatar go. However, Combustion Man refused to follow Zuko’s orders and died moments later.
5 Sozin Caused A Lot Of Problems For Aang
While Aang never met Sozin, the Fire Lord who began the war was responsible for many things that happened to the young Avatar. Before Aang was born, his past life, Roku, was best friends with Sozin.
However, due to their views on the world, they went their separate ways and became enemies. After Roku died, Sozin’s greatest threat was out of his way and he was free to do just about anything he wanted, which made Aang’s journey much more difficult.
4 Zhao Killed The Moon Spirit
Zhao was an admiral in the Fire Nation who was one of Aang’s biggest threats at the beginning of the series. He tried to capture him, and even succeeded at one point until Zuko came to his rescue. Interestingly enough, Aang’s first firebending teacher, Jeong Jeong, was also Zhao’s master who tried to help Aang stop Zhao. The admiral, along with everyone he commanded, was eventually defeated after Aang and La teamed up to avenge Tui, the Moon Spirit.
3 Long Feng Tried To Control Ba Sing Se & Imprisoned Appa
When Aang and his friends went to Ba Sing Se, they quickly discovered that something was wrong. While Kuei was the king of the Earth Kingdom, Long Feng, the leader of the Dai Li, was the one who was actually in control and used his power to manipulate everyone around him. Though this already made him one of Aang’s enemies, the Avatar despised him even more after learning that he captured Appa, and he made sure that everyone Long Feng lied to knew the truth about the war. The Dai Li eventually betrayed him, seeing Azula as a better leader, which cost him everything he worked for.
2 Azula Almost Killed The Avatar
Ever since she was a child, Azula was quite sadistic and wanted to prove that she was the most loyal to her father, betraying her other family members whenever she could. In order to prove that she was better than Zuko, she started to hunt Aang down. She nearly killed him when she took control of Ba Sing Se. Ozai was so proud of her that when he stepped down as the Fire Lord toward the end of the series, she took his place.
1 Ozai Did Everything He Could To Defeat Aang
Ozai was the main antagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and even though it took a long time for him to be properly introduced, fans always knew that he played a big role in the many attacks against Aang. Despite knowing how evil the Fire Lord was, Aang didn’t want to have to kill him. Luckily, he was able to defeat him by taking away his bending. With Zuko becoming the next ruler of the Fire Nation, he and the Avatar worked together to undo all of the harm that Ozai and the previous Fire Lords caused.
