When fans think of benders from Avatar: The Last Airbender they may think of the Gaang first and then perhaps Azula and Uncle Iroh. Fans tend to think of the strongest and most powerful benders of the franchise, but what about the weaker benders in the world of Avatar?
Despite the main characters being some of the most powerful benders, the world of Avatar is filled with inept benders. All considerably weaker than the Gaang and other memorable characters.
10 Master Yu’s Students Are Still Just Beginners
While in the Southern Earth Kingdom, Aang joins an earthbending class in hopes of finding a master to teach him. Aang is easily overpowered by the other students and, as the class ends, Aang overhears two students talking about other powerful earthbenders. However, the two boys do not offer to share any information with Aang and instead mock him.
Katara, however, is able to get the information out of the two boys easily, as she completely overwhelms the two earthbenders with her waterbending. The two bullies are then left frozen together in an alley with a newfound fear of Katara.
9 Admiral Zhao’s Bending Lacks Discipline
Admiral Zhao may have been the main antagonist in Book 1, but it was not his bending ability that made him a fearful foe. Zhao was power-hungry and a narcissist, wanting to raise his own status within the Fire Nation. In doing so, he concocted plans to capture the Avatar and even kill the moon. However, despite his arrogance, bad temper, and underhanded schemes, Admiral Zhao wasn’t the most powerful fire bender.
Despite being a fire-bending master, trained by the infamous Jeong Jeong, the general was bested by both Zuko and Aang. By disregarding the discipline of fire bending, Admiral Zhao’s own bending was unbalanced and was able to be overcome by exploiting that imbalance.
8 Yon Rha Was Actually A Coward
Yon Rha was the Southern Raiders’ Commander and the man who murdered Katara and Sokka’s mother. However, despite being the monster that haunted Katara’s nightmares throughout her childhood, Yon Rha turned out to be a coward rather than an intimidating fire bender.
When Katara and Zuko track down Yon Rha in order to exact Katara’s revenge, the monster she remembers is now a weak and cowardly man. A man who could only muster one fire blast before being completely overwhelmed by Katara and begging her for his life.
7 Combustion Man Has One Attack & One Attack Only
Combustion Man may seem like an intimidating bender with his tall, gruff, and muscular appearance, not to mention the tattoo on his forehead, but he’s not quite as strong as he seems. This bender, aptly named by Sokka due to his bending style, is able to create large explosions at will through his third-eye tattoo. However, despite creating mass destruction with his combustion bending, his attacks lack versatility.
All of his attacks consist of pinpoint explosions. Although they are powerful, they are also easy to avoid or block, as can be seen when Combustion Man attacks the Gaang. Both Aang and the Gaang were able to escape Combustion Man’s multiple assassination attempts. Combustion Man is even killed by his own bending ability, thwarted when Sokka’s boomerang hits him square in the forehead. In doing so, Combustion Man lost the ability to control his explosions and quite literally self-destructed.
6 Fire Nation Man Is Weak & Hated By Everyone
Fire Nation Man is a disliked earthbender in the Earth Rumble tournaments. Fire Nation Man was an earthbender who paraded around the tournaments in Fire Nation-inspired garb, a red cloak, a traditional Fire Nation hairstyle, and a large Fire Nation flag.
His love for the Fire Nation made him a despised competitor and to the fans of Earth Rumble 6, he thankfully did not make it far in the tournament. Fire Nation Man was easily defeated by The Boulder, unable to get a single attack in before being blasted out of the arena.
5 Sangok Is Weaker Than A Sea Sponge
Sangok is an awkward teenager and Master Paku’s waterbending student. However, despite being the pupil of the greatest waterbenders in the North Pole, Sangok’s own talents are sorely lacking. In a match against Katara, who had only been training under Master Paku for a short time, Sangok was only able to send off one attack before being quickly incapacitated.
Master Paku even states that in a few more years of training, Sangok may be able to fight off a sea sponge. Not the greatest confidence booster for a weaker bender like Sangok.
4 The Canyon Guide Can’t Bend Without His Arms
The Canyon Guide may have been an impressive bender in order to safely guide travelers across the Great Divide. However, his skills at earthbending appear to fall short amongst the other powerful earthbenders in the series. The Canyon Guide is easily attacked by a Canyon Crawler and is injured, without the use of his arms, the Canyon Guide cannot earthbend.
Other earthbenders in the series have been known to earthbend without relying on their arms, suggesting that the Canyon Guide’s rigid style of bending is what makes him a weaker bender.
3 Hide’s Bending Reflects His Immaturity
A young firebender who was a classmate of Aang’s at the Fire Nation School, Hide was a popular student and a bully. His hot temper manifested in an attack using firebending at Aang for talking to his girlfriend. Hide then attempts to attack Aang, but is thwarted when Aang evades his every blow.
Hide inevitably loses, despite Aang never engaging in the fight. Hide’s immaturity and short temper are reflected in his firebending, making him one of the less impressive benders in the franchise.
2 Yagoda Can Only Use Waterbending To Heal
Yagoda may be one of the strongest healers in the North Pole, due to her accumulated years of practice and her status as the head healer. However, due to her gender, she is not one of the strongest waterbenders of the franchise.
In the North Pole, women are not allowed to learn waterbending for any other purpose than healing. Due to this custom, Yagoda has never unlocked her true potential as a waterbender. Thus making her one of the weakest on this list, despite her innate abilities as a healer.
1 Long Feng Relies More On The Dai Li Than On His Own Bending
Long Feng may be the mastermind behind the Dai Li, but his strength seems to come from his machinations and ability to use people rather than his earthbending skills. Granted, Long Feng was able to capture Appa and deal a critical blow to Jet with his earthbending. However, Long Feng seems to rely more on trickery and his secret police force than his own skills.
Long Feng was also easily dealt with when he attempted to confront Appa, the Sky Bison easily tossing the earthbender back into Lake Laogai. Long Feng may be one of the big bads in Book Two, but it’s not his bending that makes him an intimidating villain.
