Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most unique and well-rounded animated shows to come out of the West. The Last Airbender comfortably holds a title as one of the great Japanese anime. Despite being originally geared towards a younger audience, the character development, beautiful art style, and engrossing storyline captivated fans of all ages.
Avatar brings the laughs, the tears, and the adrenaline, and has cemented itself as the baseline of a kid’s show that appeals to everyone. When a show has such an unparalleled power system like bending, it’s no wonder the fight scenes are some of the most memorable parts of the series.
10 Sokka Vs. Piandao (Sokka’s Master)
Despite not being a bending battle, the swordfight between everyone’s favorite “comic relief” characters was an important part of Avatar. Sokka’s Master is a great demonstration of how non-benders make an impact in such a world. Fans finally get to see Sokka prove his worth – both to himself, and to the fans who labeled him as just a tag-along character. Even though his trusty boomerang was like another member of the team, it was great to see him get a master of his own to help him become a formidable force on the battlefield.
9 Katara Vs. Pakku (The Siege Of The North)
The first season of Avatar has the slowest pacing, which can be forgiven considering all the necessary world-building that had to happen. The core group has only just started finding its footing, and Katara doesn’t seem to contribute much due to her inexperience as a Waterbender.
All of this changes during the finale of Book One. Fans get a shock after seeing Katara give Pakku, a Waterbending Master, a run for his money. The Siege Of The North is the first time fans see a true battle between two of the same benders, and Katara’s formidability is a sight to behold.
8 Avatar Roku Vs. Firelord Sozin (The Avatar And The Firelord)
Flashback episodes are usually looked down upon, but The Avatar And The Firelord is one of the best episodes of the season. The origin story of how Aang’s predecessor, Roku, had to handle the beginning of the 100-year war was desperately needed. Fans finally get to see a fully recognized Avatar show off his mastering of all four elements. He fights the strongest Firebender in the world, and fans were in awe at the elegance.
7 Toph Vs. Earth Rumble Fighters (The Blind Bandit)
Bringing in new characters into an already loved group of heroes is a struggle for any show, let alone one as adored as Avatar. Fans knew it was coming as Aang needed an Earthbending master to train him. Nobody was expecting a young, blind girl to be the master of what’s considered the sturdiest and solid of all the elements.
Toph quickly captured the hearts of watchers with her incredible strength and tenacity. She also had a unique, sonar-like ability to feel the vibrations in the earth to know where everything is. There’s no better introduction than having a character take on multiple enemies at once with ease.
6 Katara Vs. Hama (The Puppetmaster)
The Puppetmaster is one of the darkest episodes as it follows the grittier and more ominous by-products of war, prisoners of war. It’s revealed that Katara isn’t the last Waterbender from the southern tribe, but rather an escapee who learned a new Waterbending skill that was seriously overpowered.
Bloodbending sends shivers down the spines of watchers. Katara learns that, during a full moon, Waterbenders can control the bodies of living individuals. The ultimate fight between two master Waterbenders will never be forgotten.
5 Siege Of Ba Sing Se (Finale)
The Order of the White Lotus had been an enigmatic group throughout Avatar, with subtle hints of its existence being noticed by the most eagle-eyed watchers. As an organization that supersedes the quarrels between nations, watching a team of the wise and elderly thwart the plans of the Fire Nation was a welcoming sight.
The finale is the first and only time fans see benders of all four elements work in perfect synchronicity to take down a common enemy. Fans can watch masters of their craft show off their unfiltered skill. Uncle Iroh’s return to Ba Sing Se was the perfect ending for the character.
4 Invasion Of The Fire Nation (The Day Of Black Sun)
The Day Of Black Sun sees the protagonists enact on their long planned invasion. It brought back many beloved side characters. The invasion of the Fire Nation was always going to be a huge battle. The audience knew something that the protagonists didn’t – the Fire Nation was already aware that the invasion was going to happen.
Seeing the new technology created specifically for the invasion, and watching the effects of war happen in real-time, left fans on the edge of their seats to see when it would all come crumbling down. Amazing Earthbending, the swamp monster, and the inner fights between the GAang and the Dai Li agents made this battle a game-changer.
3 Aang And Katara Vs. Zuko And Azula (Crossroads Of Destiny)
Every season finale had to end in an epic climax that brought the heroes to their breaking point. This was never truer than the end of Book Two, and the fight in the Ba Sing Se catacombs between Aang and Katara, and Zuko and Azula.
There were so many nail-biting moments that left the outcome of the battle shrouded in mystery – whether Zuko would finally choose the path of good, and if Aang can win without access to the Avatar State. It’s the first time fans see Katara’s full potential after her training against foes that rival her ability, and Azula’s utter ruthlessness.
2 Zuko And Katara Vs. Azula (Finale)
As to be expected, the final battle of the entire story would end up being the greatest of The Last Airbender. The heroes split up for a three-pronged assault on the Fire Nation, before Ozai reduces the Earth Kingdom to ashes as they did with the Air Nomads.
The Agni Kai that everyone had been waiting for was here. With Sozin’s Comet above, the Firebending was at an unrivaled power. Seeing Zuko fight Azula, who is slipping from sanity, and sacrifice himself for Katara was the ultimate act of redemption. This, along with an epic music score and beautiful visuals made the battle legendary.
1 Aang Vs. Ozai (Finale)
The battle Avatar was alluding to was an underdog tale for the ages. Fans wondered if Aang could ever hope to defeat one of the most powerful Firebenders, who is also juiced up by Sozin’s Comet, without the Avatar State.
The battle was a visual masterpiece. Without any dialogue, the animation and the soundtrack spoke for itself. The battle scenes were interspersed with the Agni Kai, and Sokka and Toph’s attempts at stopping the airship fleet. Aang finally gets his Avatar State back, which puts Ozai on the back foot. The bending techniques he used led to the most iconic artwork of all of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
