The Switch port for Zombie Army 4: Dead War is well on track to release on April 26th, but that doesn’t mean the process of bringing the game to Nintendo’s console was particularly easy for developer Rebellion.

In a conversation with GamesIndustryBiz (thanks, GoNintendo!), studio head Arden Aspinall stated that the game will be the team’s “most audacious port” yet, but highlighted that bringing it to Switch proved particularly challenging due to the console’s limited memory:

“The first thing was just getting it running on the platform: I mean, it’s a huge game, It was maxing out on everything on the PS4 and Xbox, so with our under three-and-a-half gigabytes of accessible memory, getting that thing in memory [was] a nightmare.”

The team would quickly notice performance issues as a result of this:

“That’s when we started realising how much trouble we were in with the performance, because we’d go in and see the framerate drop.”

Since the game was in development concurrently with the PS4 and Xbox One versions, the team also needed to implement any existing updates to the Switch version while also considering those yet to come.

The team behind the port previously worked on the excellent Sniper Elite 4, so here’s hoping Rebellion’s work will result in a strong experience for Switch owners. Will you be picking up Zombie Army 4: Dead War on April 26th? Let us know below.
