Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) was a cult classic animated series until the fan base exploded after the series appeared on Netflix in 2020, allowing old fans to stream and new fans to join the cult. While some of the heroes in the show received quite a bit of love from the animation team, there were others that kind of fell by the wayside.
Additionally, there were some heroes that did appear quite often but weren’t necessarily used to their fullest potential. There were also heroes that fans just loved and wanted to see more of regardless of how much screen time they received. Most importantly, there were several villains that converted to heroes throughout the series that fans would have loved to see more of.
10 The Hilarious Musical Nomads The Gaang Met On Their Way Back To Omashu
The nomadic group of happy-go-lucky music lovers was the most annoying group of people in the world according to Sokka. However, most fans enjoyed this quirky group of musical nomads with their silly jokes and catchy tunes, such as “Secret Tunnel.”
While these guys weren’t traditional heroes in the sense that they fought the bad guys, they did help the Gaang make it through the Cave of Two Lovers without dying. They also maintained a positive attitude despite being trapped in a dark cave with terrifying creatures.
9 The Fan Favorite, Avatar Kyoshi (& The Other Past Avatars)
While fans love Avatars Aang and Korra more than any other Avatar introduced thus far, many of the ones introduced during Aang’s television run (and Korra’s) were incredibly interesting characters that fans only saw glimpses of. The next most popular Avatar among fans is Kyoshi, and her novel series has shed a great amount of light onto her character and her history, which is quite long at 230 years. With the success around the Kyoshi novels, fans shouldn’t be surprised if a Kyoshi series ends up coming out of Avatar Studios.
Avatar Roku is also present throughout the series as Aang’s main connection to the previous lives of the other Avatars. While much of his history was explored, several other Avatars such as Kuruk or Yangchen had minimal screen time and could potentially provide fans with incredible new Avatar stories.
8 The Boulder Was A Fun Side-Character That Could Have Done More
The Boulder was more of a gag character, poking fun at the real-world Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. However, he manages to undergo a significant character change by going from underground street brawler to respected Earth Kingdom warrior.
While maintaining his goofy speaking pattern, he explains to Toph that he fights for his Kingdom now which is why he joined in the war efforts against the evil Fire Lord Ozai. He wasn’t heard from much after that, but fans would have loved to hear more of the lovable goofball known as The Boulder.
7 The Bubbly Chi Blocker Known As Ty Lee
Ty Lee is always happy and cheerful despite being an enemy for a majority of her screen time. Most fans agree that Ty Lee is one of the best characters, and despite her airheaded persona, she manages to allude to a bit of her depth in the show (and comics).
Not only did she keep her circus family safe from Azula by choosing to go with her rather than allow Azula to stay and torment them, but she also protected Mai from Azula when she chi-blocked her at the Boiling Rock. Ty Lee was secretly a hero the entire time and fans never got to see her true potential as a Kyoshi Warrior.
6 The Fire Nation’s Greatest Swordmaster, The Legendary Piandao
Piandao is a legendary swordmaster known throughout the Fire Nation as the greatest wielder of a sword their people have to offer. Not only has he trained Sokka in standard sword fighting, but fans learn in the comics that he also trained Prince Zuko with dual broadswords.
Piandao ends up being a really great guy and is even revealed to be one of the higher-ranking members of the White Lotus during the series finale. It’s unlikely he will receive his own spin-off series, but if he could find a way to fold back into the story, fans would love to see Master Piandao again.
5 The Hero With Arguably The Best Character Arc In The Show, Prince Zuko
While Zuko starts as the show’s antagonist, fans learn to love him as a hero, as he develops and learns over the course of three seasons. Zuko may have had plenty of screen time throughout the series, but that doesn’t mean fans were satisfied.
Zuko was one of the only characters capable of keeping fans’ attention throughout an entire episode by himself. Some fans have even posited that Zuko is the true hero of the show as his arc and development were much more detailed than Aang’s, and his troubles were much more relatable.
4 Most Fans Agree, They Wanted More Suki (& The Kyoshi Warriors)
When Suki formally joined Team Avatar, fans couldn’t have been happier. However, she wasn’t even mentioned in The Legend of Korra, despite being a favorite among fans. It’s unknown if her relationship with Sokka panned out or even how her career as a Kyoshi Warrior progressed after the war.
Fans have been temporarily sated by the Suki exclusive book, Suki, Alone though with Avatar Studios soon to be churning out new content, fans are hoping to see Suki again assuming the creative team revisits the Gaang. Suki is a popular enough character to warrant her own book so she could possibly get her own spin-off mini-series leading the Kyoshi Warriors around the Avatar world.
3 Uncle Iroh Was Always A Delight & Offered Incredible Wisdom
While Iroh was posited as a villain at the beginning of the series, within a few episodes fans realized that his reign of villainy had ended many, many years ago. The Iroh that fans know and love is a peace-loving old man who offers delicious tea and great wisdom to anyone who seeks either.
Iroh was a prominent character throughout the series and he was one of the few characters that could do no wrong in the eyes of fans. Perhaps fans will get more of Iroh in future Avatar stories, maybe even an origin story exploring Iroh’s younger days as a general and his transformation from warmonger to sage.
2 The Wild & Crazy King Bumi Definitely Should Have Been More Involved
King Bumi was a character that was drastically underutilized in the Avatar series. Not only was he an incredibly powerful earthbender and the King of Omashu, but he was also Aang’s only remaining friend still alive after his 100-year iceberg nap. Bumi’s reunion with Aang was both hilarious and heartwarming, but he was only in a couple of episodes after that.
While the focus of the show was on the Avatar, Bumi seemed to be too important of an ally to keep waiting in the wings, after all, Aang named one of his kids after the guy. His lack of involvement was especially frustrating during his imprisonment period since he easily could have escaped at any moment despite not being a metalbender. Hopefully, fans can get more of this fun and weird character in future Avatar stories that explore the past.
1 Katara & Sokka’s Father, Chief Hakoda (& The Southern Water Tribe Warriors)
Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe was a strong warrior, an inspiring leader, and an incredible father to Katara and Sokka. Most interactions between Hakoda and his children were lovely and made fans learn to love and trust Hakoda.
Additionally, there are several emotional moments between Hakoda and his children, which only solidify his importance to their character arcs and motivations. Not much is known about Hakoda’s travels between leaving home and reuniting with his children. A spin-off series that followed the exploits of the Southern Water Tribe Warriors and their fearless leader Hakoda could be incredibly exciting and provide a gaggle of tie-ins into the main series.
