Atari has unveiled a new collection coming to Switch and other consoles in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary. The appropriately-titled Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration will include over 90 games spanning the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, ST, Jaguar and Lynx, and it’s coming later this year.
As reported by Game Informer in an exclusive first-look feature, the collection covers those six platforms and also represents the first time Jaguar and Lynx games will be officially available to play on modern consoles. There’s no word on exactly which games will be included just yet, but we’ll update this post when we hear more. It will apparently feature “six new titles inspired by the classics”, though — see the blurb below for more details.
Anyone who’s played an Atari compilation in the past and is wary of another one might have their minds put at ease to know that Digital Eclipse is handling the emulation and overall package this time. This is the developer responsible for some of the best retro-focused collections going, including such sparkling packages as the Mega Man Legacy Collection, the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection. So, it appears that we’re in pretty safe hands with this one — a relief for anyone who feels that Atari’s treatment of its back catalogue has been somewhat lacking over the years.
Here’s some more info regarding the included games from Atari’s website:
Swordquest: AirWorld – Yes, you read that right: After nearly 40 years of waiting, the team at Digital Eclipse has created the fourth and final entry in the legendary Swordquest series, inspired by the design concepts of original Swordquest creator Tod Frye. Who will be the first to solve its mysteries – and finally complete the quest?
Haunted Houses – The original “survival horror” game for the Atari 2600 gets a modern 3D voxel-based sequel, featuring more houses, more spooky situations, and more urns.
VCTR-SCTR – This mashup celebration of the vector era of gaming combines the gameplay from Asteroids, Tempest, and other vector-based arcade classics into a single, continuous challenge.
Neo Breakout – An amazing and addictive two-player competition that combines the best features of Breakout and Pong, with a modern graphic style.
Quadratank – The first new entry in the classic Tank series since 1978 combines features from the original games with four-player fun in team or free-for-all modes.
Yars’ Revenge Reimagined – Howard Scott Warshaw’s masterpiece for the Atari 2600 gets a whole new look – and you can swap between original and modern graphics at any time! Designed by Digital Eclipse studio head Mike Mika, who created the Game Boy Color version of Yars’ Revenge in 1999.
The games will feature a variety of modern conveniences and filters. Given the developer’s expertise with adding value to its compilation with supplementary ‘museum’-style extras, the package apparently contains over 60 minutes of exclusive interviews with Atari developers and industry figures, with historical images and other assets also forming part of the experience.
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is set to release Holiday 2022. Let us know below if this is tickling your nostalgia bone.
