Apocalypse Unveils His Plan to Destroy Marvel’s Strangest Utopia

[ad_1]

Marvel’s Dark Ages have turned Apocalypse into the biggest threat there is, and now he is poised to end the world all over again.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Although the Marvel Universe has been thrust back into the Dark Ages in the new miniseries of the same name, the heroes of the world have overcome the odds and transformed a dystopia into a utopia. Mankind can now rest easy within the safety of bustling supercities, all connected by the world’s greatest telepaths. Unfortunately, this future is also home of the mutant villain Apocalypse, who desires nothing more than to tear it all down for his own twisted purposes.

Saving the world from the ancient, living machine known as the Unmaker came at the cost of enveloping the world in a never ending electromagnetic pulse that negates the use of electricity. All around the globe people have adjusted to their new way of life with the help of the heroes who have helped them find their way through the darkness.

Dark Ages #2 (by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC’s Joe Sabino) reveals that Apocalypse has taken over Europe, and the villain kidnaps Tony Stark intending to force the brilliant inventor to help bring about his nefarious plans for the world. Apocalypse reveals to Stark that he has found a way to harness energy despite the EMP wave, something that Tony has failed to accomplish.

Apocalypse goes on to reveal how he has been able to work around the electromagnetic pulse that Doctor Strange unleashed to stop the Unmaker. As it turns out, Apocalypse has discovered that by using Magneto as a living power source, he can effectively quench the effects of the EMP in a specified area. Constantly expending his powers in such a way is obviously torturous for the Master of Magnetism, so Apocalypse utilizes the mind-controlling powers of Zebediah Killgrave aka the Purple Man to ensure Magneto’s compliance.

As horrible as the villain’s new power source has turned out to be, his intentions for that power are even worse. As Killgrave exerts his will over Tony Stark’s mind, Apocalypse explains how he felt the Unmaker’s awakening the first time around, and he describes it like touching the mind of something greater than a god. With Tony’s genius-level intellect and Magneto’s power at his disposal, the mutant plans to awaken the Unmaker once more in a bid to claim the being’s power for himself.

Apocalypse has already proven that he is willing to bend, break, or bury anyone who gets in the way of him achieving his goal. The narration by Spider-Man promises that things don’t get better from here, although it does not reveal whether or not the villain’s plan is ultimately successful. Still, Spider-Man reveals that Apocalypse’s plan is basically the sacrifice of the world, which does not bode well for the future of the utopia he and the other heroes have created.

It is difficult to imagine how Apocalypse could possibly take control of an entity as powerful as the Unmaker, but the mutant is not a normal villain. He has proven himself to be capable of more than anyone could guess, with each new development in his character making him stronger than the last. If anyone is capable of bringing about the end of the world it is definitely the aptly named villain Apocalypse.
