Apex Legends: Mad Maggie’s Passive Might Break the Game

[ad_1]

Mad Maggie has just joined Apex Legends, but players are a bit wary of her new passive ability which appears to be worryingly powerful.

As usual, whenever Apex Legends adds another hero to their impressive and diverse roster of Legends, players are eager to try and figure out how they might play and how their abilities might affect the playstyles of other characters. That is no different as Season 12: Defiance approaches. Respawn Entertainment is getting ready to launch the new season, with all the focus on the game’s newest Legend, Mad Maggie.

Fans are feeling a little bit of trepidation when it comes to Mad Maggie’s introduction into Apex Legends. From the information released by Respawn about their new character, a rebellious freedom fighter sent to the Apex Games as punishment for her crimes, players are worried that Mad Maggie’s passive ability has the potential to break the game. Just how worried should players be to meet Maggie on the battlefield?

What Is Mad Maggie’s Passive Ability?

Apex Legends' Mad Maggie leads a riot on Salvo.

Mad Maggie’s passive ability, “Warlord’s Ire” comes in two parts, a deadly combo that has the potential to wreak havoc in the battle royale and the other game modes. The first feature of “Warlord’s Ire” is that enemies that Maggie damages will be highlighted, giving Maggie a solid foundation for aggressive play for tracking down opponents. As powerful as that sounds already, the passive is also bolstered by an additional ability that allows Mad Maggie to move faster with a shotgun in her hands.

The two abilities are especially concerning, looking to act as a double whammy that will make tactical retreats particularly difficult. Where it may not be all too concerning in more open spaces of the map, Apex Legends’ locations have verticality and varied interiors that are designed with counter-attacks and flanking in mind. Maggie threatens to negate that ability, with opponents she damages unable to stealthily get the jump on her. Instead, it appears that Maggie will have all the opportunity to hunt down foes and deliver a swift end.

How Does Maggie Compare to Other Trackers?

Tracking opponents is nothing new to Apex Legends, with a number of other Legends already possessing abilities that reveal enemy locations on the map. Bloodhound is a tracker from the ground up, with a passive showing a track of recent enemy actions, a tactical scan and an ultimate that gives Bloodhound a period of enhanced speed and vision. Titanfall 2 transplant Ash has the ability to scan death boxes and ping opponents that survived the skirmish. Seer too is a character with a loadout of abilities to reveal where nearby enemies are.

However, Maggie is particularly worrying both from how her passive comes as a 2-in-1 package, as well as the offensive capabilities of her tactical and ultimate abilities. Maggie’s tactical “Riot Drill” is designed to break through barriers and defenses, while her ultimate “Wrecking Ball” is a barrelling projectile that players will need to avoid. While the likes of Seer, Bloodhound and Ash all have tracking abilities, they work best paired with teammates. With Maggie, it appears she can do it all herself.

However, this sort of thing is nothing new for Respawn Entertainment. A reassurance they have consistently told fans is that they would rather add something possibly overpowered and later scale it back, rather than add something underpowered and try to build it up from there. While Maggie could prove to be a game-changer, it will be interesting to see how she acts in practice, and how Respawn will react.
