The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer appears to have MJ falling to her death. However, someone else besides the MCU’s Peter Parker could save her.
With Sony/Marvel finally dropping the much-anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, fans were eager to parse through to see what was brought over from the movies outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shockingly, there’s a dire sequence in the trailer depicting Zendaya’s MJ falling off scaffolding, akin to Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, with Tom Holland’s Spidey diving after her to save his beloved. However, it’s possible the MCU’s Peter Parker won’t be the one to save MJ — it’ll be Andrew Garfield’s version instead.
Now, the trailer didn’t bring back Tobey Maguire or Garfield, but with Otto Octavius mentioning this isn’t his Spidey and Doctor Strange talking about “visitors” coming in from other sinister realities, it’s easy to suspect both Spider-Men will show up.
In Garfield’s case, he could make a grand entrance in the fight against Sandman, Electro and Lizard by actually being the one to rescue MJ as she falls in the New York setting. In the trailer, the MCU Pete’s hand extended to grab her, which harkens to Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when Garfield’s Spidey caught Gwen, but due to the acceleration of the fall, she broke her spine and died.
Having Garfield’s Spidey swing in to save the day would allow him to rectify this catch and fix the biggest mistake of his life. After all, he considered Gwen his soulmate, and although he was moving on by the film’s end, he was still scarred and in mourning.
Thus, he can get a modicum of closure here, helping out a younger Pete and proving that Spider-Men can’t do it all by themselves. It’ll remind the webheads of teamwork and show how they learn from their past. More so, it once more illustrates to the MCU’s version how close the concept of mortality keeps hitting home, with Holland’s Pete sometimes finding this issue out his hands — literally.
It’s already happened with Uncle Ben and Tony Stark, so to have him go through this panic only for another wall-crawler to step up would be unpredictable, dramatic and jaw-dropping. It’d also be nice seeing Pete not endure what happened when Gwen died in the other universe as he’s way too young for more trauma to be bogging him down.
Ultimately, this simply fits the MCU’s shock and awe aura for Phase Four, as this third chapter from Jon Watts clearly wants to pay homage to Webb’s movies and the Sam Raimi films prior. There’s no better way than to let Garfield’s Spidey regain a victory in this Spider-Verse so he feels like he’s not a failure. In the process, he can inspire his counterparts and preserve the idea of true love in what fans would hope is a happy ending for all involved.
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
