Andrew Garfield Shares His Feelings About the MCU’s Spider-Man

Actor Andrew Garfield defends Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man in the MCU, comparing the superhero to timeless Shakespearean characters.

Former The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield came to the defense of Tom Holland and his portrayal of Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When asked if it’s been annoying to see so many reboots of the Spider-Man franchise, Garfield backed his fellow Spidey actor, telling Andy Cohen on Sirius XM’s YouTube channel, “I’m afraid I can’t co-sign that one with you.”

“It’s like Hamlet, like, you can never get enough Hamlets or Macbeth. I think the world dictates that and I think it is… I will vouch for the character for a second in the sense that, it’s the only superhero where he’s covered head to toe, you don’t see skin color, you don’t see, sexual orientation you don’t see any of those things,” Garfield continued.

Garfield further suggested that, because of that anonymity, fans from all different backgrounds can picture themselves in the red and blue suit. “I think that’s why he’s probably the most beloved superhero, universally throughout every culture, throughout every race,” he continued. “When my tenure was done and Tom Holland’s tenure started… I don’t share your sentiments, I’m afraid. I was very happy and very excited.”

Garfield played the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, following Tobey Maguire’s run as the web-slinger in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy (2002-2007). Meanwhile, Holland debuted as the MCU’s Spider-Man in 2016’s Avengers: Civil War and reprised the role in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). He will next appear as the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While the rumor mill previously suggested that both Maguire and Garfield will make cameos in No Way Home as variants of Spider-Man who exist in different universes within the MCU’s Multiverse, both of the actors have denied those claims. In fact, Garfield most recently addressed the rumors when he claimed an alleged image from No Way Home was edited to include him. Specifically, Garfield said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, “Well, if you show me the photo, I can tell you whether it’s me or whether it’s a real thing…I heard about it. And I did see it. And it’s a Photoshop.”

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to hit screens on Dec. 17.
