Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield explains why his version of Peter Parker probably wouldn’t like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony Stark.
The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has revealed that he doesn’t think his version of Peter Parker would like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony Stark/Iron Man — and the reason has to do with wealth.
In a video with GQ, Garfield answered a question about how the Iron Man would treat his Spider-Man on Quora. Garfield responded, “I definitely think Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man would be pretty suspect of MCU Iron Man. I think he would be a little turned off by the excess, the billionaire, trillionaire status of Ironman [sic]. I think it would rub my version of Spider-Man the wrong way. But maybe there could be some influence there. Maybe my Peter Parker could wake Tony Stark up to his own egoic drives a little bit. We’ll never know. We’ll literally never know.”
As Garfield notes at the end of the video, it’s incredibly unlikely his version of Spider-Man will ever interact with Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. made his debut as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, which launched the MCU. However, the character died at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. A version of the hero voiced by Mick Wingert did appear in Disney+’s animated What If…? series, but Downey doesn’t seem likely to return to the MCU anytime soon.
Garfield first played Peter in 2012’s Amazing Spider-Man and reprised the role for 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man 2. While the movies were modest commercial successes, neither fared particularly well critically. There were initially plans for a third film and several spin-offs that were scrapped when Sony and Marvel Studios teamed up to bring the Tom Holland version of Spider-Man to the MCU. He made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and has since starred in two solo films, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
At this time, there are rumors Garfield will reprise his role as Peter in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is slated for release on Dec. 17. That movie will feature the return of Amazing Spider-Man 2 villain Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx) as one of several bad guys from across the multiverse and franchises looking to get revenge on Peter. However, Garfield has denied on several occasions his rumored role in No Way Home. Still, such denials are common when it comes to high-profile cameos in MCU movies.
Garfield’s latest project is Tick, Tick… Boom!. Based on Jonathan Larson musical of the same name, the project is directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie released earlier this month and is available to stream on Netflix.
