An Unlikely Mutant Walked Off a Fatal MCU Situation

[ad_1]

A minor member of the X-Men just used their powers in a new way — and in the process, survived a threat that’s killed an MCU hero within seconds.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Secret X-Men #1, now on sale from Marvel Comics

The mutants of the Marvel Universe are nominally among the most capable figures in their reality. Omega-Level Mutants have routinely been shown to act on god-level tiers, and the less powerful often find creative applications for their abilities. Even the relatively obscure X-Men heroes can turn a nominally simple power into a surprising advantage in almost any situation — including ones that have easily killed other heroes.

A minor figure in the X-Men’s orbit just casually survived the kind of situation that actually killed a Marvel Cinematic Universe hero on-screen. Instead, Secret X-Men #1 by Tini Howard, Francesco Mobili, Jesus Aburtov, and VC’s Clayton Cowles reveals that Marrow is easily able to survive the vacuum of space using her powers to make a bone-space suit, providing how adaptable mutants really are.

Secret X-Men #1 focuses on a group of unlikely mutant heroes venturing into space on a mission of great importance to the Shi’Ar. One of Krakoa’s most important cosmic allies, the Shi’Ar Empress Xandra — the daughter of Charles Xavier and Lilandra — has gone missing. Among the assembled X-Men are Marrow, who typically uses her powers to grow her bones into a variety of uses — mostly weapons. While this usually makes her a primarily close-combat hero, it turns out she’s had an idea on how to better utilize her powers in more dangerous locations. This includes the vacuum of space, which can typically freeze humans within moments.

When the team is attacked, a handful of the group — Armor, Sunspot, and Cannonball — move into action thanks to their powers protecting them from the dangers of space exposure. Marrow joins them to their surprise, and refuses to don a spacesuit. This is because Marrow had an idea — to create a bone spacesuit that completely covers her body. Knowing resurrection was on the table if the plan failed, Marrow threw caution to the wind and tested it out — and to the surprise of her teammates, it works perfectly well. Completely armored up, Marrow is able to help fight back against Sidri who are attacking them. Marrow’s creative use of her powers highlights just how capable and powerful the X-Men really are.

While exposure to space can kill pretty much any humanoid figure in the Marvel Universe — including most aliens — mutants can utilize their varied powers to adapt with ease. This is the kind of situation that’s proven repeatedly fatal in the MCU: In Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord’s brief exposure to space almost killed him. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had Yondu actually die within seconds of being in open space, proving how quickly even superpowered aliens can fall to this dangerously realistic means of death. Meanwhile, Marrow — a minor X-Man who usually uses her powers to make bone knives — figured out a workaround and used it to great effect.

With the X-Men reaffirming their potential and power thanks to the era of Krakoa, it’s worth remembering whenever they’re capable of showing off so effectively. This isn’t even the only time lately where the X-Men have reminded readers how powerful they really are, with Iceman holding his own against Thor-level threats. When the X-Men inevitably make the move to the MCU, there’s a good chance their abilities and creativity with them might give them an edge over pretty much anyone else in the universe.
