An Omega-Level Friendship Could Cement an Avengers Alliance

[ad_1]

A newfound friendship between an Omega-Level Mutant and a major heroic figure could create a major heroic alliance.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4, now on sale

The X-Men have been in a difficult position since forming Krakoa, with their heroic bonds across the Marvel Universe being put into jeopardy by the mutant nation’s aggressive posture. But one of the most dangerous concerns might have just been solved — paving the way for a potentially game-changing friendship.

X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Clayton Cowles sets up the Omega-Level Exodus and the Nexus Being Scarlet Witch as potential friends in light of her actions on Krakoa — which could be a huge deal going forward for the X-Men and the rest of the mutant nation.

Since taking a ruling position on the Quiet Council, Exodus has been very specific about the place of the mutant race in the world removed from humanity. He’s also been one of the most prominent figures calling out the Scarlet Witch as a “pretender,” whose role in bringing about the temporary end of the mutant race branded her as an enemy of the mutant nation. The former villain has remained something of a wild card in the Quiet Council though, playing a relatively minor (but important) role in the continuing functions of the mutant nation.

However, things have changed radically by the end of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4. Having dedicated herself to making up for the events that resulted in the decimation of the mutant race, Scarlet Witch is revealed to have more or less sacrificed her life (with the confidence that she’d be resurrected, either by the Five or by other mystical means) with the intent of expanding the mutant resurrection protocols. Thanks to a spell that effectively granted the Five the ability to resurrect anyone with an X-Gene from across space and time, the mutant nation can now arguably say they’ve truly uncovered the key to immortality. Scarlet Witch is openly given credit for this addition, and the mutants of Krakoa are seen embracing her — including Exodus, who now refers to the former “pretender” as the “redeemer.”

It’s a huge shift for how the mutant nation sees the Scarlet Witch and the role she plays on Krakoa. Notably, she’s also been seemingly accepted as the daughter of Magneto and — if not a genuine mutant, at least close enough to have a place on Krakoa. With even Exodus on her side, one of the biggest reasons the X-Men had been held up in other alliances — such as with the Avengers and the Kree/Skrull Empire — has been effectively dealt with. By accepting Wanda Maximoff, Krakoa may have found the key to shoring up their alliances with the other heroes of the Marvel Universe.

The idea that Exodus and Scarlet Witch could become overt friends is also an exciting one. For Exodus, it helps confirm that the former villain is moving in the right direction, becoming more open-minded and willing to shift his views on the rest of the world — if he can overcome his hate for the Avenger that almost ended the mutant race, maybe there’s a chance he could accept anyone. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Witch is formally and fully aligned with Krakoa now, and can stand alongside former enemies who’d tried to kill her own family. It’s a major sign that the X-Men and the Avengers might not necessarily have to come to blows, and can instead reaffirm their friendship as two of the world’s most important heroic forces.
