The one person closest to Daredevil may have just been killed by the Kingpin, and Wilson Fisk might not be prepared for the fallout.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Devil’s Reign #3, available now from Marvel.
Wilson Fisk’s open war on superheroes in New York City has sent most of those same heroes underground. Thankfully, they have still managed to find ways to fight back, with Luke Cage and Jessica Jones even taking to battling Fisk on his own turf in broad daylight. While others fear being rounded up just for showing their face in public under these devastating circumstances, the heroes of Hell’s Kitchen have attorney extraordinaire Foggy Nelson there to keep them out of any undue legal trouble. Unfortunately, it’s for that very reason that Foggy has become the former Kingpin’s latest victim, and that might just be the last line Wilson Fisk will ever cross.
Mayor Fisk’s Thunderbolt Units have made life harder than ever for the heroes of NYC. Even though they can’t fight the former Kingpin of Crime the way that they have for decades, several have discovered the best way to strike back at the would-be tyrant. Specifically, through the very same political system that Fisk has used to give himself unprecedented power over the city. With other superpowered vigilantes Fisk has relied on his Thunderbolts to quell their efforts, but the public and political nature of the situation have taken that tactic off the table. Of course, Wilson Fisk spent decades without his own superpowered police at the disposal, and it is made clear that he still doesn’t need them in the pages of Devil’s Reign #3 by Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Marcio Menyz, and Clayton Cowles. Rather than lash out at the hero running against him, Fisk sets his sights on the man keeping Luke Cage out of jail while he campaigns, and with that Foggy Nelson’s fate is tragically sealed.
Franklin “Foggy” Nelson has been an indelible part of Matt Murdock’s life ever since the very start back in 1964’s Daredevil #1 by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. Having grown close with Matt when they were law school roommates, the two eventually opened their own practice after graduating. Over the years Foggy has grown to be Matt’s closest confidant, one of Daredevil’s greatest assets, and an important figure in the city’s political landscape. All of that has also made him one of the biggest threats to Fisk’s regime, leading to his apparent death at the hands of two of the former Kingpin’s thugs. The thought that Foggy was murdered in cold blood is chilling enough, but the fallout from this callous crime may very well end up being even worse.
There might be some glimmer of hope that Foggy somehow survived this brutal attack, but the chances aren’t good. Then again, it isn’t really going to matter as far as Matt Murdock is concerned. Daredevil is most certainly going to be out for blood once he discovers what has happened to his best friend. Rage has always been a powerful motivator in Matt’s life, and there is no doubt that he will be aiming that fury straight at the mayor. As understandable as that reaction may be, it would also make Daredevil a clear villain in the eyes of the public that Fisk has been manipulating. On top of all of that, there is the concern that if Matt did fall into his anger entirely, his fellow heroes would be the ones left to rein him in.
Putting Daredevil at odds with the rest of the city’s heroes wouldn’t just harm his own reputation, it would be a major blow to Luke Cage’s efforts to replace Wilson Fisk as mayor. Attacking Foggy wasn’t just a way to send a message to or set back the competition, it was simultaneously the best and worst decision that Wilson Fisk could have possibly made. Assuming he survives the coming storm, the former Kingpin may have just solved nearly all of his superpowered problems with one devastating move.
