An MCU Hero Is Being Hunted by Thanos

[ad_1]

Eternals #9 sees Thanos seeking revenge against Phastos, the technological mastermind of the Eternals, portrayed in the MCU by Brian Tyree Henry.

The latest issue of Eternals sees the Mad Titan Thanos hunting down Phastos, who was recently portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by actor Brian Tyree Henry.

A preview for Eternals #9, written by Kieron Gillen with art by Esad Ribić and Guiu Vilanova, shows Thanos breaching the defenses of Lemuria, the city of the Deviants. Currently, the Eternals are residing within Lemuria trying to learn more about their former Deviant foes as a means of changing their ways. Thanos, who has obtained the rank of Prime Eternal, seeks revenge against Phastos for manipulating him both physically and mentally in an elaborate plan to shut down the Great Machine that controls the Eternals’ immortality — and also kills humans with every rebirth.

While the Thanos of the MCU does not bear the same connection to the Eternals as his comic counterpart, Phastos’ role as the cosmic family’s master inventor — and a man constantly searching for meaning in life — made the successful transition to director Chloé Zhao’s big-budget adaptation. Henry said in interviews that portraying Phastos and capturing the character’s nuances helped him regain faith in humanity.

“I remember when I was coming to this project that I, Brian, had kind of lost faith in humanity, just looking at all the things that we’ve been through and just what the images of Black men were and how we’re being portrayed and how the power was taken from us, the lack of power or feeling powerful,” Henry said. “What I really loved the most about Phastos is that through all of that — him being eternal, him never being able to die — he still chose love. He still decided to have a family, even though he may have to watch them perish. He still tried to find a way to bring heart and love to everything he did, even though his genius was used against him.”

Henry’s views mirror the character arc of Phastos in the film. The inventor of the Eternals, Phastos grew disillusioned with the warmongering habits of mankind after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Over the course of the movie, he reunites with his fellow Eternals after a long period of seclusion and rededicates himself to protecting the Earth.

The MCU also saw its first openly gay relationship in the Eternals with Phastos and his husband Ben Stoss, played by Haaz Sleiman. In the film, Phastos is committed to his husband and their son, Jack. In a press conference attended by CBR prior to the film’s release, Henry said that the heart of the film was its emphasis on family.  “It’s unlike any feeling I’ve ever experienced to work with this beautiful palette of people and make a family because this is what families look like,” Henry said. “This is what they are. And if not, this is what they should be.”
