An All-Star Superman Character Nearly Returned in DC Future State

The fan-favorite Regan from All-Star Superman was initially picked for Future State: Superman: Worlds at War, writer Phillip Kennedy Johns says.

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson revealed on social media that Regan, a character from a touching scene in All-Star Superman, nearly made a return in his two-part story in Future State: Superman: Worlds at War.

Regan was a teenage girl that Superman saved from committing suicide in Grant Morrison and Frank Quitley’s All-Star Superman #10. The scene, where the Man of Steel comforts her atop a building and whispers, “you’re much stronger than you think you are,” has since become a much-cited example of Superman’s compassion and love for humanity. According to Johnson, Regan was supposed to star in Worlds at War, but she was replaced by a character named Sadie in the final book.

“It didn’t work because Sadie needed to be a character that *Clark Kent* had saved with his writing, not Superman,” Johnson tweeted. “But I’m still determined to bring Regan back in someday.”

Worlds at War delves into a possible alternate future for the DC Universe in the aftermath of the 2020-21 event “Dark Knights: Death Metal.” In this future, Superman is missing, and vast numbers of people have begun to worship him with religious fervor. Sadie travels to Metropolis from Gotham to attend a gathering of individuals who have been saved by Superman. As she listens to tales of Superman rescuing them from aliens or natural disasters, she grows increasingly disillusioned with their hero worship and speculation on how the Man of Steel is likely dead or willingly segregating himself from Earth.

Sadie, it turns out, sees Clark Kent as her savior, not Superman. She reveals that her life was changed after reading an obituary for The Daily Planet that Clark wrote about a Black man who turned his back on a prospective musical career to fight in World War II. This man died homeless, but devoted his life to helping people and was a hero in Clark’s eyes.

Sadie’s appreciation for Clark is juxtaposed with the Man of Steel’s actual whereabouts — on Mongul’s Warworld. There, Superman fights in a gladiatorial arena, tirelessly sacrificing himself and inspiring a legion of Mongul’s slaves to rise up and unite, much in the same way as he did for the citizens of Earth.

Johnson is the current writer of Action Comics, and has been vocal about his desire to portray Superman as an avatar of hope. During New York Comic Con 2021, he added that an evil Superman a la the Injustice version would never appear in his run on the title, pointing out that it was “possible to have ultimate power, and not be a monster.”
