An official trailer for DC’s middle-grade graphic novel Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld teases Amaya’s quest to save her family — and her kingdom.
CBR has an exclusive first look at the official trailer for DC’s upcoming middle-grade original graphic novel Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld.
Set for release on Tuesday, Nov. 9, Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld comes from New York Times bestselling authors Shannon and Dean Hale and artist Asiah Fulmore. The OGN follows Amaya/Amethyst, who returns to her home realm of Gemworld after having spent three years banished to Earth. Amaya quickly discovers that Gemworld has been ravaged by an “unstoppable” monster and that her family has gone missing, meaning it’s up to her to save the kingdom.
A DC hero synonymous with the 1980s, Amy Winston/Amethyst was originally created by writer Dan Mishkin and artist Ernie Colon, first appearing in 1983’s Legion of Super-Heroes #298. Mishkin, now joined by co-writer Gary Cohn, re-teamed with Colon for Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, a 12-issue limited series that ran from 1983 to 1984. A second Amethyst series ran for 16 issues from 1985 to 1986, with a four-issue Amethyst limited series following suit in late 1987.
Amethyst, now known by her real name of Amaya, re-joined the DC Universe in 2012, debuting under the New 52 banner in Sword of Sorcery #0 by Christy Marx and Aaron Lopresti. Her biggest resurgence, however, came when she was included in the most recent iteration of Young Justice, which was published under writer Brian Michael Bendis’ Wonder Comics imprint starting in 2019. Amaya went on to star in Amethyst, a new 6-issue limited series written and illustrated by Amy Reeder, which was published by Wonder Comics in 2020.
The upcoming Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld OGN marks the DC return of Shannon and Dean Hale. The writing duo previously penned the 2020 Wonder Woman-centric middle-grade graphic novel Diana: Princess of the Amazons, illustrated by Victoria Ying.
Amaya, Princess of House Amethyst in Gemworld, is something of a troublemaker. She and her brother have great fun together until a magical prank goes much too far and her parents ground her… to Earth! They hope a whole week in the mundane world will teach her that magic is a privilege… and maybe washing dishes by hand will help her realize the palace servants should be respected.
Three years later, Amy has settled into middle school and ordinary life. She doesn’t remember any other home. So when a Prince of the Realm brings her home and restores her magical destiny, how will she cope?
Written by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale and illustrated by Asiah Fulmore, Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld goes on sale Nov. 9 from DC Comics.
