Amazon Shelves Nic Cage-Led Tiger King Series

[ad_1]

Amazon’s Tiger King series starring Nicolas Cage will not move forward and is being shelved.

Nicolas Cage will not be getting in the cage — the tiger cage, to be specific.

According to Variety, Cage will not portray Joe Exotic in Amazon Prime Video’s dramatized version of the Netflix docuseries, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. It appears the project has been shelved for the time being, although it may be shopped to other outlets. The series is produced by Imagine and CBS Studios.

“We should clear the record,” Cage said. “I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together. They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”

Tiger King fans can rest easy, as there are still multiple related projects in development. Kate McKinnon’s series, in which she stars as Carole Baskin, Exotic’s rival and nemesis, is still going ahead at Peacock. That drama will feature John Cameron Mitchell as Exotic, Dennis Quaid as Rick Kirkham, Brian Van Holt as John Reinke, Sam Keeley as John Finlay and Natt Wolff as Travis Maldonado. Kirkham is an American journalist who served as Exotic’s reality TV producer. Reinke is a former manager of the G.W. Zoo who lost both his legs in a bungee jump accident. Finlay and Maldonado were both married to Exotic. The former is now remarried, but the latter tragically committed suicide on the grounds of the zoo.

Joe Exotic follows Baskin’s quest to shut down her rival’s big cat business after she discovers that he is breeding and using the animals for profit. However, Baskin has a checkered past of her own, and Exotic will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as hypocrisy.

Other Tiger King programs in development include Investigation Discovery’s Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, which will explore the case of Baskin’s missing husband, Don Lewis, and a Netflix project on the infamous Siegfried & Roy 2003 tiger attack, which left Roy Horn permanently injured and led to the closing of Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage Resort and Casino.
