Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ Head of Global TV, sees things getting “bigger, bolder” in Season 2 of The Wheel of Time series.
Amazon Studios’ Head of Global TV Vernon Sanders expects that the success of The Wheel of Time Season 1 means that Season 2 will be an even more impactful experience.
Speaking with TVLine, Sanders was very positive about the future of the epic fantasy series. When asked if showrunner Rafe Judkins was given a green light to ramp things up for the second season, he said, “Yes. Rafe has been a fantastic leader — thoughtful, kind, really dedicated to trying to do this the right way — and Rosamund [Pike] as well. So we absolutely went into Season 2 with a real conversation about, ‘What can we do even better now that we have introduced this giant world and established these characters?’ So I will absolutely predict that Season 2 will be bigger, bolder and a more expansive Wheel of Time.”
Viewers have also reacted positively to the show, streaming it in record numbers for the service. It recently topped Nielsen’s list of original streaming content with 1.16 billion viewing minutes during its premiere week in mid-November. The show dropped three episodes at once, a practice used on other hit shows such as The Boys, which helped The Wheel of Time beat out competition from Netflix like Locke & Key and Cowboy Bebop.
The show picked up a second season renewal before the first even dropped, evidence of the huge investment made and confidence Amazon has placed in the series. Production began over the summer, with news of the casting of key characters from the novels such as the royal Elayne Trakand coming in the fall.
Based on the 14+ novel series created by Robert Jordan and completed by Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time follows the story of the Dragon Reborn, the reincarnation of a powerful One Power-wielding man who broke the world more than 3,000 years ago. The show recently revealed that Rand al’Thor from the Two Rivers is that reincarnation as he and the rest of the Emond’s Fielders travel to the Eye of the World with the Aes Sedai Moiraine (Pike) and her Warder Lan to meet the Dark One.
Rand’s fate, and that of the rest of the world, will be revealed Friday when the season finale airs on Prime Video. There is no release window as yet for Season 2, though Sanders did reveal that he has received first cuts of the first episodes and that he “cannot wait for the audience to see what we have in store.”
