Alex Ross explains why he believes comics are still the “guiding light” for what we see in superhero film franchises like the MCU.
Acclaimed artist Alex Ross recently explained why he stuck to the classic looks for the characters he painted for a mural in Marvel’s New York offices, instead of the costumes they sport in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During Comic-Con@Home 2021, Ross spoke with Sal Abbinanti about painting the mural’s 35 individual “Timeless” images, which were sold as variant covers and appear the The Alex Ross Marvel Comics Poster Book. “It was based upon characters, the versions that… kind of stood the test of time the longest,” Ross said.
The artist added, “You know, whenever you’ve got a new design for a particular character, it often might seem to overwhelm the company’s attention to push that first. And, you know, this includes like, classic looks of the FF [Fantastic Four] or Sub-Mariner. Or, you know, some of these characters seem to never change, like Spider-Man.”
However, Ross explained, “But everybody gets a kind of clothing change at some point, and I was trying to just sort of stick with, ‘This is what’s got the… greatest longevity to it,’ and these are not necessarily reflective of the influence of what happens in the Cinematic Universe, because these are kind of two different worlds. There’s the publishing world, which is sort of always going to be the guiding light that influences what happens in cinema. But the cinematic stuff doesn’t have to dictate what was, you know, what was the classic, timeless version of these things, and that’s what I tried to do.”
