In Agents of SHIELD, the Koenig family feels like a small army. But how many family members have appeared on the series in total?
As Agents of SHIELD began to establish itself with a universe of unique characters that weren’t the Avengers, many opportunities arose that allowed for new and unique characters to join the franchise. A great example of this is the Koenig family, which consists of multiple siblings played by Patton Oswalt, a sister and an ancestor who assisted the Strategic Scientific Reserve years before SHIELD was founded. Although the family tree has since been established, fans who watched the show as it was released were given multiple Koenigs, making it hard to keep track of them. So how many Koenigs are there exactly?
Eric Koenig
Eric Koenig was the first of the brothers to be introduced on Agents of SHIELD and was stationed in a secret base called Providence by Nick Fury. The team appeared at the base following Hydra’s takeover of SHIELD, and he served as one of the few trustworthy agents left. However, as the agents tried to stop Hydra, Agent Grant Ward revealed his allegiance to the organization by betraying and murdering Eric. His death was what alerted Skye to Ward’s turn.
Billy Koenig
Billy, like Eric, was entrusted by Fury to oversee another secret base that he called the Playground. Following Eric’s death, the team eventually met Billy, who offered his base as a safe place for them to lay low. He stayed with the team for an extended time, and through him, the team learned that he was a part of the Life-Model Decoy program. Billy also confronted his brother’s killer but didn’t take his life in revenge. The second brother stayed on with the team before returning home with the rest of his family.
Sam Koenig
Like his brothers, Sam was a loyal SHIELD agent and was given many high-profile tasks while working with Coulson. Aside from working on LMDs with his brother, Billy, Sam also protected Raina after the team learned that Whitehall was looking for her. He also confronted Grant Ward alongside Billy and maintained a level head. He and Billy remained loyal members of the team, taking on enemies like the Watchdogs, and eventually joined his family in taking a trip home for a much-needed break.
Thurston Koenig
Although his other siblings joined SHIELD, Thurston went against the grain and fashioned himself into a slam poet and activist. Constantly voicing his opinions against SHIELD, Thurston never approved of their methods and called those that aligned with them “sheeple.” His choices also caused a massive rift between him and his family, but he eventually was forced to join them for his own protection. Once his family was reunited, they put aside their differences and returned home, offering to help the team when needed.
LT Koenig
LT was the older sister of the quadruplets and often bullied and teased them. As they got older, she joined SHIELD and convinced three of her brothers to join as well. As a veteran agent, she was sent on many dangerous missions and fell off the grid for some time. But when her family was in danger, she reappeared and helped her brothers secure the Darkhold from dangerous interested parties. In Agents of SHIELD, she was last seen returning home with her family, offering help whenever needed.
Ernest Koenig
Ernest Koenig was the grandfather of the Koenig siblings, the sixth and final family member introduced, and the earliest ally of SHIELD. Working in a speakeasy in the ’30s, Ernest aided the time-traveling agents in Season 7 and eventually opened his secretive doors to members of the SSR. Those same members later started SHIELD, making him one of the most important members many have never heard of. Although he could be testy, he never stopped doing what was right, a quality that he passed down to his grandchildren.
