Agatha Harkness Star Deflects When Asked to Fancast Mephisto for the MCU Series

Kathryn Hahn expertly dodges a question about who she would cast as the fiery demon Mephisto for her upcoming Marvel show Agatha: House of Harkness.

Kathryn Hahn, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Agatha: House of Harkness, avoided giving a direct answer when asked who would be her choice to play the extra-dimensional demon known as Mephisto.

On The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore and Hahn discussed the latter’s debut as the witch Agatha Harkness on the hit Marvel Studios series WandaVision. The host threw a bit of a curveball at her guest when she asked about the oft-rumored but never-seen character of Mephisto. There were many theories about who the character might have been or when he might have arrived during that first series’ run, but it never happened. It appears Barrymore hasn’t forgotten and hopes to see him in the new series, but Hahn played coy in her answers.

“Is there a possibility that Mephisto might be making some type of appearance?” Barrymore asked the actor near the end of the interview.

“I keep hearing that. I have no idea,” Hahn responded emphatically. “That was like a big thing during WandaVision, but I have no… who knows. I mean, I think right now, like anything, like Marvel, I mean, who knows. It’s… anything is probably possible, but like, I have never heard anything definitive about that at all.”

Undeterred, Barrymore pressed further on the subject. “If you could cast anyone as Mephisto, who would you pick? If you are in the driver’s seat and, you know, Agatha gets to pick her Mephisto, would there ever be anyone who fits the bill?”

Pausing to gather herself, Hahn took a sip from her mug, drawing huge laughs from Barrymore and the audience. “I mean, all I’ll say in terms of a real great deflection of that question,” the actor begins, bringing more laughter from everyone, “is that there is something that does feel so badass to be playing, like… you know, we think of a witch and you think of a, you know, immediately you think of a woman who is loud, who is mysterious, who is dangerous because she’s complicated and she’s misunderstood. And all that stuff is a real turn-on to me as a performer in terms of digging into this person a little bit more. Very excited.”

“Well, everyone will be hanging on every detail that comes up,” Barrymore responded leadingly.

“Me too!” Hahn agreed.

Barrymore finished with a flourish: “That mani-phistos out of this.”

“Nice!” answers Hahn.

While details are still sparse about the series, it’s been known since early October that the series was in the works, with WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer working on its development. Hahn’s character was initially a nosy neighbor type seen in many traditional sitcoms, but over the course of WandaVision, it became clear there was more to her until she was revealed as Agatha Harkness, a witch fascinated by Wanda’s chaos magic. Hahn’s portrayal of the character — originally created in 1970 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a survivor of the Salem Witch Trials — drew critical acclaim, fan adoration and led to a deal for the actor spanning multiple films and shows in addition to the Agatha Harkness series.

Just like there is no word on whether Mephisto will appear, there’s no premiere date for Agatha: House of Harkness as yet, but fans can watch Hahn in action as the witch in WandaVision, streaming now on Disney+.
