Afterlife Star Performed Some Scenes While Completely Blind

While talking with Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Jason Reitman, Adam Savage learns that the film’s Ghostbusters Goggles were actually a visual hindrance.

A fan-made pair of Ghostbusters Ecto Goggles, courtesy of MythBusters‘ Adam Savage, manage to see things better than an actual Ghostbusters: Afterlife prop.

Savage released a YouTube video wherein he detailed his experience cosplaying as a Ghostbuster for this year’s New York Comic Con and showed off his costume to Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman. In addition to being impressed with his makeshift Proton Pack, Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, took a particular liking to Savage’s goggles. “Logan [Kim] would have killed for these on set,” Reitman said. While both agreed that Afterlife‘s Ecto Goggles are “beautiful,” Reitman admitted that “you can’t see through them, so when he was acting, he literally… we had to like be, like, ‘Look a little left’ otherwise he just didn’t even know where to look.”

Later on, Savage got to meet Ghostbusters Afterlife cast members Logan Kim, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon and Celeste O’Connor, all of whom praised his craftsmanship. When he revealed his goggles and mentioned how “you can see through the goggles,” everyone reacted positively, with Wolfhard joking, “If we make another Ghostbusters movie, that’ll make things so much easier.”

The Ecto Goggles have been a part of Ghostbusters iconography since the original 1984 film, alongside the Proton Packs, Ghost Trap, P.K.E. meter and the Ecto-1 car. The goggles would make reappearances in both Ghostbusters II and the 2016 Ghostbusters‘ mid-credit scene, as well as cartoons like The Real Ghostbusters and the 2009 Ghostbusters video game, which utilized them for a mechanical purpose of locating ghosts and secrets in each level.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a follow-up story to the original film timeline, centers on Egon Spengler’s daughter Callie, who takes her children Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Grace) to live in an Oklahoma home formally belonging to Harold Ramis’ late Ghostbuster. Upon arriving, they soon discover a number of paranormal phenomena happening across the town of Summerville, which, as shown in the trailers, leads to a reemergence of ghosts in the streets. In addition to classic Ghostbusters tools, Afterlife‘s trailers feature new additions to the cast’s arsenal like an Ecto-1 side-gunner seat and a four-wheeled RTV Trap.

Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife releases in theaters Nov. 19.
