After School Tea Time caused a stir when K-On! first made its 2010 debut. The band’s songs reached the Oricon charts several times, with the band itself quickly becoming a household name in the early 2010s. The anime’s success only pushed After School Tea Time’s popularity forward, creating a major cultural shift in the anime community.

However, they’re not the only anime band in town, nor will they be the last. Some of the other bands may not have cutesy and light-hearted lyrics, but they built a unique brand with their music, ranging from catchy and upbeat to soulful and heart-wrenching, finding themselves a dedicated fanbase.

In 2010, Kyoto Animation captured anime fans’ attention with its anime adaptation of K-On!, jumpstarting the “moe craze” of the 2010s. The anime focuses on the Light Music Club, its members forming a band, After School Tea Time, to perform various concerts in high school. Because of the anime’s success, After School Tea Time became a household name, with their first single, “Cagayake! Girls,” reaching the fourth spot in the 2010 Oricon charts. The band’s influence continued outside the anime community, appearing in campaigns created by the Kyoto prefectural government. Even after the anime ended in 2011 with its movie, After School Tea Time remains a cultural icon and an iconic anime band.

9 Sanrio Adds Their Own Spin On Battle Of The Bands (Show By Rock!!)

Sanrio has recently pumped out anime for various ages while staying true to its cute, wholesome aesthetic. In 2015, Sanrio released Show by Rock!!, an anime centered around cute anthropomorphic characters in a musical battle royale.

Plasmagica is a new band trying to make it in Midi City, its latest member being the anime’s protagonist, Cyan Hijirikawa. Initially from the human world, Cyan is thrust into the mysterious Midi City and gets to know her new bandmates – drummer Moa, bassist Retoree, and lead guitarist Chuchu. Her surprisingly sentient guitar, Strawberry Heart, becomes her guide around Midi City and musical mentor. Show by Rock!!‘s popularity gave birth to three more seasons in the coming years focusing on other bands in Midi City, but Plasmagica remains a popular band to this day.

8 ENOZ Pays Homage To An Actual Japanese Rock Band (The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Initially starting as a parody of ZONE, a Japanese rock band, ENOZ is a four-member band from North High School. The acronym derives from the first letters of the members’ last names: Miyuki Enomoto, Takako Nakanishi, Mizuki Okajima, and Mai Zaizen.

After two band members are injured, Haruhi and Yuki substitute as their lead vocalist and guitarist, respectively. Fans who may not have watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya may still recognize her iconic black bunny suit that she wears during the school’s cultural festival. This outfit can also be seen on ENOZ’s album, with Haruhi and Yuki featured on the cover.

7 Black Stones Got Three Albums Due To The Anime’s Popularity (Nana)

Also known as BLAST, the Black Stones are a prominent musical group from Nana. The band formed in a small town, gaining popularity with the local teens. Along with their vocalist, Nana Ozaki, Black Stones moved to Tokyo to establish themselves in the music industry.

Three Black Stones-inspired albums were released during Nana‘s runtime: two for the live-action films and one for the anime. However, the albums used two different singers for the vocals: Mika Nakashima for the movies and Anna Tsuchiya for the anime. Black Stones is still praised for its rugged, soulful music, even after the anime’s ending and the manga’s indefinite hiatus.

Most anime fans would be familiar with Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, even if they’ve never seen the anime before. Its timeless and touching storyline makes it a staple amongst other music anime.

The band initially started as BECK with its five members: the lead guitarist Ryusuke “Ray” Minami, the bass guitarist Yoshiyuki Taira, the rapper Tsunemi Chiba, the drummer Yuji “Saku” Sakurai, and the vocalist Yukio “Koyuki” Tanaka. The name came from Ray’s dog but was changed to “Mongolian Chop Squad” as a rebranding. Regardless of the name change, the band is still determined to spread its name and music across Japan.

5 Given Quickly Became A Fan Favorite (Given)

With the anime’s success in 2019, Given’s popularity increased as a band as more fans praised its heartfelt music. Given’s band members include Mafuyu Sato, the vocalist, guitarist Ritsuka Uenoyama, drummer Akihiko Kaji, and bassist Haruki Nakayama.

When Mafuyu first joins the band, Ritsuka becomes his mentor and helps him with his guitar playing. Their romance gradually blossoms as Mafuyu grows closer to his bandmates. Given’s music – in both the anime and the 2020 movie – touched the hearts of anime fans worldwide. In just two years, it’s solidified itself as a favorite amongst many.

Shinichiro Watanabe charmed audiences once again with his 2018 musical masterpiece, Carole & Tuesday. The songs used throughout the anime were unique and colorful, but none stood out as much as the titular band’s music.

Carole Stanley and Tuesday Simmons hail from two different worlds but develop a friendship based on their deep love for music. Since Mars’ colonization, AIs control much of human life and interactions, especially the world of music. The girls want to bring the human touch back into music and touch the world with their singing. What’s unique about Carole & Tuesday is the musical composition from FlyingDog, the music label that inspired the anime. Also, various foreign artists lent their voices to the unique cast of characters.

Bakumatsu Rock is a band of misfits bonded by their love of rock music and the lead vocalist, Ryoma Sakamoto. With his bandmates, Shinsaku Takasugi and Kogoro Katsura, they go around 19th-century Japan to make a name for themselves in the world of music.

However, their biggest obstacle is the Tokugawa shogunate, which wants to rid Japan of music deemed “unacceptable.” The Shinsengumi is the only approved group of musicians who produce “Heaven’s Songs” to brainwash the public. It’s up to Bakumatsu Rock to break those stifling barriers and open up the world to freely express themselves through music.

2 Poppin’Party Was Created To Help The Girls Find Themselves (BanG Dream!)

The BanG Dream! anime appeared on the scene just four years after Love Live!‘s booming success. However, this anime focuses on various new girl bands making a name for themselves in the rock music scene.

The prominent band is Poppin’Party, a five-member band that bonded over music, searching for their individual spark. Unlike the members of μ’s who came together to save their school, the Poppin’Party members practice their music for upcoming concerts and chances to play at live houses. They idolize more established local bands such as Roselia and Afterglow. Four years after the anime’s airing, Poppin’Party remains a beloved anime band.

1 Detroit Metal City Is A Reference To A KISS Single (Detroit Metal City)

Detroit Metal City pays homage to KISS’ single of a similar name: “Detroit Rock City.” The band debuted in a 12-episode OVA series of the same name, its first episode airing in 2008. Small-time musician Soichi Negishi is the death metal band’s frontman, with Johannes Krauser II as his stage name. Like Retsuko from the Aggretsuko anime, Soichi is soft-spoken and meek but holds intense amounts of rage that need to be released at times.

Soichi and his other bandmates hide behind demon-like personas to create a chaotic image that thrives off of shock value. Detroit Metal City is a parody anime with a small but loyal cult following. Fans can’t help but burst into laughter while watching the characters’ over-the-top antics.
