AEW’s Jon Moxley Enters Inpatient Alcohol Rehab Program

All Elite Wrestling star Jon Moxley, who performed as Dean Ambrose in WWE, enters an inpatient alcohol rehabilitation program.

All Elite Wrestling star Jon Moxley, known by WWE fans as Dean Ambrose, is undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction.

“Jon Moxley has allowed me to share with you that he is entering an inpatient alcohol treatment program,” AEW President Tony Khan tweeted. “Jon is a beloved member of the AEW family. We all stand with him and Renee, and all of his family and friends, as he shifts his focus to recovery.”

“Jon is making a very brave choice to get help, and we’re embracing his choice and supporting him however we can,” Khan continued in his thread. “I’m proud to call Jon a friend, and like many of you, I’m also a fan of Mox and look forward to a time in the future when he is eventually ready to return to the ring. Until then, thank you for supporting Jon and respecting his privacy at this time. If you or a loved one need help, please reach out to SAMHSA’s National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357).”

Moxley (real named Jonathan David Good) made a name for himself on the independent wrestling circuit before joining WWE’s Florida Championship Wrestling in 2011 as Dean Ambrose. It was there that he’d meet Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, who together formed a group known as the Shield and debuted on the main roster at Survivor Series in 2012 by helping CM Punk defend the WWE Championship.

The Shield was a leading heel faction in WWE, but their feud with Kane saw all three members of the team become babyfaces. In 2014, however, Rollins defected to side with the Authority, and Ambrose and Reigns became singles competitors.

After several years, several championship reigns and a brief Shield reunion, Ambrose left WWE in April 2019. “The whole time from when I came back to about the beginning of the year, I knew I was leaving,” he recalled the following November. “But I was pissed about it. I wasn’t excited to leave, I was bitter about it. I can’t believe that they’re going to make me leave. I can’t believe they’re going to make me walk away from all this money. Can [WWE] not write just one good storyline? Can they just give me one good promo? Does everything have to be fucking stupid? Does everything have to make me look like an idiot? For fuck’s sake, you’re going to make me walk away from all this fucking money because it’s not like I wanted that money. Yeah, I want it, but I’m not doing that shit. So I was pissed. I can’t believe they were so incompetent that they’re going to make me walk away from all this money. Jesus Christ, now I have to go back to the indies, fuck it, let’s go.”

Shortly after his WWE departure, Ambrose — returning to his indie ring name Jon Moxley — joined AEW, where he’s remained since.
