Abigail Brand Turned SWORD Into a Bigger Threat Than WandaVision

S.W.O.R.D. #7 just increased the organization’s power levels, making Marvel’s mutant space station even more dangerous than its MCU counterpart.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for S.W.O.R.D. #7, on sale now from Marvel.

In both the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, S.W.O.R.D. has made a major impact. Regardless of the medium in which it appears, the organization has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. In the comics, however, S.W.O.R.D. has become even more dangerous than its MCU counterpart, thanks to its mutant leader Abigail Brand.

S.W.O.R.D. just reached a dangerous new level of power in S.W.O.R.D. #7, by Al Ewing, Stefano Caselli, Protobunker’s Fer Sifuentes-Sujo and VC’s Ariana Maher. In this issue, Abigail Brand and her agents came to the aid of Emperor Hulkling and his Kree/Skrull Alliance against Dormammu’s Mindless Ones, when no one else would. Hulkling tried to contact Henry Peter Gyrich, of Alpha Flight, but apparently no one responded.

In reality, Brand intercepted Hulkling’s signal to Alpha Flight so she could gain the favor of the Kree/Skrull Alliance, while subsequently gaining more influence with the Galactic Council. This move was a pretty dangerous power play, showing that Brand could simply block vital interstellar communications at any time. With this power, Brand could gain leverage against the Kree/Skrull Alliance, so she could later soften the shocking news of the Scarlet Witch’s death.

This is pretty important, not only considering the Scarlet Witch is Hulkling’s mother-in-law, but also because the Avenger was murdered on Krakoa. In a personal note, Brand also mentions that the Quiet Council, Krakoa’s governing body, is unaware of her actions. With this in mind, if anyone outside of Krakoa/Arakko found out about Brand’s actions, this could spell catastrophe for S.W.O.R.D.

This version of S.W.O.R.D. is much more dangerous than the one that appeared in the recent WandaVision series. The MCU’s take on S.W.O.R.D. was founded on extraterrestrial operations, just like in the comics. By the time of WandaVision, however, S.W.O.R.D. became more focused on producing weapons from A.I. and robotics than space travel. This focus placed S.W.O.R.D. on a much smaller scale than they have become in the comics.

Generally, S.W.O.R.D. has been more focused on protecting the galaxy, and even the greater solar system, from extraterrestrial threats, placing their missions on a much larger scale than their MCU counterpart. Ever since the first issue of their new title, S.W.O.R.D. has expanded its reach and power levels even further than before, and has become an exclusively mutant-run operation.

S.W.O.R.D. now includes some extremely powerful mutants, including the Six, a circuit of mutants who can reach into other dimensions. In fact, at the end of S.W.O.R.D. #1, the Six reached into another dimension, only to return with the powerful new metal, Mysterium.

As the series has gone on, Mysterium has played a big role in consolidating S.W.O.R.D.’s power. This dangerous metal has been used to fix Marvel’s cosmic economy, and make alliances between mutantkind and galactic alliances across the solar system. Of course, Mysterium is quite an unknown quantity, making its use very risky.

Even Doctor Doom cautioned against dealing with metal from another dimension, saying that Mysterium had the power to end worlds and bringing it into their dimension altered the balance of things. If someone as dangerous as Doctor Doom is cautioning against using Mysterium, it’s clear that S.W.O.R.D. is dabbling in dangerous territory.

It’s unclear exactly what consequences Mysterium will bring to the universe, or if anyone will discover Brand’s secret machinations. Even so, for now, S.W.O.R.D. has become a truly powerful and dangerous force, especially with the mutant’s acquisition of Mars and making it the capital of the solar system. S.W.O.R.D. is now a mutant space-station with a reach spanning across the solar system…and even into new dimensions.
