A Young Boy Learns What It Means to Be a Hero in 9/11 Graphic Novel (Exclusive)

CBR has an exclusive excerpt from the I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 graphic novel ahead of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Scholastic’s Graphix imprint is celebrating the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with the release of I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001. The graphic novel by Lauren Tarshis and Corey Egbert is an adaptation of Tarshis’ I Survived the Attacks of September 11 and continues the I Survived chapter book series.

CBR has an exclusive excerpt from I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 and features a young boy named Lucas and his Uncle Benny, his dad’s best friend at the fire department. Uncle Benny taught Lucas everything he knows about football, but when Lucas’ parents want him to quit playing because the sport is too dangerous, he naturally turns to Uncle Benny for advice. However, when Lucas skips school to ride the train into New York to talk to Uncle Benny at the firehouse, he arrives just as the first plane has crashed into the World Trade Center.

The excerpt finds Uncle Benny on the phone with dispatch as Lucas watches with a worried look on his face. Uncle Benny calls in a 10-60, which Lucas recognizes as the worst kind of alarm. The young boy immediately recognizes that no matter how dangerous it will be for Uncle Benny and the firefighters to enter the building, they are still going to do their job. It doesn’t help that at least 10 floors are engulfed in fire. Lucas recalls a time when his dad told him how every floor on the Twin Towers is the size of a football field, and how difficult it will be to climb that many stairs while wearing 50 pounds of gear.

“Uncle Benny? What will you do?” Lucas asks. With a soft pat on the head, Uncle Benny replies, “We’ll do what we always do.”

Tarshis is also embarking on a virtual tour to promote the book. Each tour stop is free to attend, and Tarshis will be joined by other children’s book creators who also have books out regarding 9/11.
