A Young Avenger and New Mutant veteran could easily become one of Marvel’s most dangerous figures.
Prodigy is one of the handfuls of mutants to tie the X-Men closer to The Avengers, with a tenure as both a young X-Man and a member of the Young Avengers. His psychomimetic powers allow him to effectively copy the intelligence and skills of those around him, something he’s put to great use for both teams.
But he wasn’t able to initially retain any information after leaving their proximity. In reality, this was a crucial distinction, as it ended up being the only thing keeping a young Prodigy from becoming the Marvel Universe’s most dangerous figures.
Prodigy has proven to be an ideal figure for both the Young Avengers and the New Mutants, serving as a calculating but compassionate planner for both groups. But while Prodigy was still learning to control his abilities in New X-Men, Emma Frost and Danielle Moonstar conspired to show Prodigy his full potential. In a possible future, the mental blocks preventing Prodigy’s retention of all his previously gained knowledge was removed. This event would transform Prodigy into a super-genius, but would more or less cost him his humanity. Within months of his power upgrade, Prodigy would have found a way to cure almost all regular diseases, albeit at the cost of Elixir, his fellow young mutant whose body was harvested for that cure.
Prodigy would have been elected President of the United States within two decades. However, his intellect left him disconnected and cold towards the rest of the world. This allowed him to become the kind of person who could casually order a bombing of China to help solidify his new global authority. Foreseeing the X-Men as the last genuine threat to his control, Prodigy would have arranged for their murder, placing the blame on rebellious former classmates. In the end, Surge, who in this series of events would have married Prodigy, realized the truth and reassembled many of their classmates to confront him and the mutants loyal to his cause. By the end of the conflict, Surge would be forced to sacrifice herself to kill Prodigy, and everyone else around them, to save the world.
It’s a potentially terrifying reality. In the current era of Krakoa, Prodigy is uniquely positioned to help keep the peace between the X-Men and the Avengers (which could be especially important when the X-Men and Avengers next come to blows). He’s been working alongside X-Factor and Cecilia Reyes on Krakoa while maintaining a romance with the Young Avenger known as Speed. His abilities have made him a uniquely gifted young man, potentially capable of even becoming a major leader in the coming years. He even eventually had the mental blocks within him removed while de-powered, showcasing how an in-control and guided Prodigy could avoid going down this potentially dark place. But none of that can erase the genuinely horrifying possibility of what he could achieve if he were so inclined.
It’s a solid reminder of the danger that still exists with young mutants, especially Prodigy. Despite the nominal alliance that Krakoa made for mutants, various figures like Northstar and Dani Moonstar have expressed doubt in working with the Quiet Council and X-Force. Considering Prodigy’s loyalty to those two mutants, as well as his own vested interest in keeping relations with humans as positive as possible, he could become a key figure in any national conflict. On the flip side, Prodigy is a good reminder that even the more underpowered members of the Young Avengers each had some genuinely destructive potential. If the young heroes currently bringing the Marvel Universe into the future aren’t careful, they could cause some serious trouble for the rest of the world.
