Fortnite Chapter 3 has made numerous changes to Fortnite, including adding vaults that players can open with friends — or a chicken.
In Fortnite Chapter 2, players saw the introduction of Cosmic Chests, which required at least two players to open successfully. These chests could contain several useful items, including Medkits, Slurpfish or high rarity weapons. In Fortnite Chapter 3, Epic Games continues the trend of encouraging playing with friends by introducing new vaults on the island that players can open if they meet the requirements. These vaults are different from what players saw in Chapter 2, Season 2, when they needed to defeat NPCs and obtain keycards to open them.
The vaults, located at Seven Outposts on the island, now have a biometric scanner that requires a certain number of players to unlock. The number of players needed to open vaults ranges between two and four players and is dependent on the game mode played (Duos, Trios, etc.). Simply standing in front of the vault with the correct number of players will open it, so no need to track down enemies or find keycards this time around. However, in a Solo match, the lock requires two players, making it impossible for a team of one to open. There is a way around this, though, and it involves a chicken.
By grabbing a chicken before heading to the vault, players can open the cache as though they were with another player. Opening a vault with a chicken is not only hilarious but also gives the wildlife on the island more purpose, especially now that crafting “primal” weapons is no longer an option. Using a chicken will also count as “another player” regarding the quests for the season that require opening a vault, making it a quick experience boost.
The tricky part about this method, however, is finding the chicken. Wildlife spawns randomly on the map and is constantly moving around, so it can be hard to get a chicken to the vault in the first place. Furthermore, after finding the chicken, it still needs to be caught and carried to the vault, which takes time and can leave players open to attacks from others. It is probably not worth the trouble unless the chicken is close by or an active quest requires opening a vault.
However, if a player can get the chicken to the vault, it will make it worth their while. The vault contains special chests with high rarity weapons and equipment inside, turning the match in a player’s favor. There is also a quick escape porta-potty inside the vault, which can help players make a speedy exit. As for the chicken, its fate is up to the player. Eliminating the chicken will spawn one meat, but this isn’t necessary as healing items will most likely be in the vault as well — are they a feathered friend or foe? You decide.
