A new character in Eaternal Nocturnal tells Dae a theory and a possible solution to his seemingly bottomless problem, but it doesn’t sound easy,
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Eaternal Nocturnal Chapter 8, “Tethered” by instantmiso and Paul Jun available in English at Webtoon.
Eaternal Nocturnal is a webtoon from the same creator of the acclaimed Siren’s Lament. It tells the story of a girl named Eve, who is suffering from chronic insomnia, and a dream eater named Dae, who is feeling unsatisfied from his recent meals. The series has already introduced the two characters, but there are still a ton of mysteries surrounding them. Chapter 8 expounds on Dae’s existence but also arouses a new set of questions.
As a dream eater, Dae’s incorporeal body leaves his husk of human flesh during the night. He wandered around the city in search of delectable snacks — people’s dreams. Consuming these allowed him to enter that particular dreamland and be a spectator of other people’s dreams. If he managed to satiate his hunger the night before, he wakes up in good spirits. However, he’s in for a bad day should his dream eater’s stomach continue to growl all night. Fans readily accepted the blandness of the dreams he consumed as the reason for his endless hunger. While this isn’t disproven, recent developments suggested another likely theory.
After enjoying Eve’s dreams for two consecutive days, Dae discovered that such circumstances aren’t a common occurrence. Dae failed to help himself to Eve’s dreams for the successive days after his feast. He found the girl widely awake and doing a variety of random activities. He was left with no other choice but to leave. He wandered around the city having to make do with what other people had to offer. Naturally, he hadn’t felt satisfied since then, and his stomach growled all night long. This led one of his dream eater acquaintances to visit him one night. Noticing Dae’s current predicament, V asked him if his recent meals proved to be unpalatable. Dae partially agreed, so his dream eater friend offered a theory.
According to V, Dae’s dilemma might likely be rooted in the fact that he was tethered to a human body. V also added whether his ever-hungry friend considered abandoning his human flesh, an idea the latter wholeheartedly rejected. The newly introduced phantasm gave up but only after saying, “It’s pretty nice once you let go of all the worldly and material problems.”
The introduction of V’s character expanded on what fans know about dream eaters, but it also poses new questions. The new dream eater’s appearance is slightly different than what fans are familiar with. V is more like a shadow, whereas Dae seems like a mixture of a dark elf and a stellar being. Taking hints from their conversation, it is perhaps safe to assume that V no longer has a human body. V’s invitation also implied that Dae could abandon his mundane shell at a moment’s notice, which may also satiate his bottomless hunger. At the same, it also piqued fans’ curiosity about what kind of existence Dae actually is: Is he a human? A half-human? Or an entirely new being altogether? There’s also the question of what other unique characteristics does a dream eater with a human body possesses. Perhaps that holds the cure to Eve’s chronic insomnia as well.
This new addition to Eaternal Nocturnal‘s world opens a new perspective about dream eaters. It also expands on Dae’s character, showing that he isn’t ready to abandon his humanity just yet. V’s theory, however, also leaves fans wondering about a couple of things. Hopefully, these questions will have their answers in future chapters of the series.
