Batgirls’ latest villain has adopted the weapon of a Batman rogue. For most of Gotham’s up-and-comers, it seems to be the popular choice to steal.
Batgirls has introduced another villain stealing the weaponry of Gotham City’s rogues gallery.
While Barbara Gordon, Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain have been headlining a brand new series written by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, they also have been facing new threats. The latest is Tutor, a street artist whose work can mind-control others, though there is another ingredient needed to make this feat work. According to a preview for Batgirls #3, Tutor uses a concoction of Scarecrow’s fear gas with nitrous oxide to make his artwork really capture the minds of others.
Tutor’s use of fear toxin is the latest remnant of Batman‘s “Fear State” event, which served as the precursor to Batgirls. Stephanie and Cassie’s respective Batgirl identities have been accused of being terrorists and destroying Gotham City’s Clock Tower, and the duo has had to face villains left over by the militaristic Magistrate. Of course, Tutor is also embracing a trope that has become more common among Gotham’s new villains: simply copy Batman’s big bads and give it your own spin.
For example, Harley Quinn has been battling Keepsake, whose gimmick is that he has stolen weaponry and tech from every villain he has ever worked for as a henchman. Scarecrow’s fear toxin has also been manipulated and changed into something else before, such as with the cheerdrops drug that plagued Gotham in Chip Zdarsky, Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira’s “Cheer” story from Batman: Urban Legends. Rather than cause fear, newcomer villain Cheer’s drug caused happiness for the user, though it was highly addictive and easy to overdose on.
Tutor was first mentioned in Batgirls #1, though he made his debut with a Two-Face-like appearance in the previous issue of Batgirls. In addition to Tutor, the Batgirls have been facing the young hacker extraordinaire Seer, who is manipulating a group of enhanced villains, the Saints, to hunt down and kill the heroes.
