Nick Offerman joins Amazon Studios’ A League of Their Own series as the coach of the Rockford Peaches, similar to the role played by Tom Hanks.
Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman has been cast in the upcoming A League of Their Own series.
Offerman will portray Coach Casey “Dove” Porter, a role similar to Tom Hanks’ character, Jimmy Dugan, in the 1992 film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Like the film, the new series from Abbi Jacobsen and Will Graham will center on the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was created after World War II threatened to shut down Major League Baseball.
Dove is a former Chicago Cubs pitcher who gained fame from his forkball killing a dove during the middle of a game. While both inspiring and charismatic, Dove missed out on becoming a star in the big leagues after blowing his arm out after just three years. The series will see him trying to make a comeback by coaching the Rockford Peaches.
When the series was first announced, Amazon Studios Co-Head of Television Vernon Sanders said, “There’s no crying in baseball, or at Prime Video. We’re so excited to partner with Sony to bring this emotional, exciting new series to our Prime Video customers around the world.”
As previously reported, the pilot episode of the Amazon Studios’ A League of Their Own was directed by Jamie Babbit, and the production consulted with surviving members of the AAGPBL, which shuttered in 1954. Amazon’s series will not be the first TV adaptation for the film. In 1993, CBS ordered a six-episode drama based on the movie with some of the original cast members reprising their roles, but only five episodes aired.
Amazon Studios’ A League of Their Own stars Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, Priscilla Delgado and Nick Offerman, as well as recurring guest stars Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field. A premiere date has yet to be announced.
