In A Discovery of Witches’ latest episode, Diana learns the identity of a secret admirer that’s been in love with her for centuries.

Now that Diana has returned from 1591 London, she’s prepared to risk everything to complete The Book of Life in A Discovery of Witches‘ Season 3. While she passionately believes that completing this magical grimoire will save all Creatures, not every ally is on the same page as her.
In A Discovery of Witches Season 3, Episode 4, Diana comes face-to-face with a disapproving Gallowglass, who worries that her singular focus might put her — and her pregnancy — in too much danger. When Diana confronts Gallowglass, he confesses his true feelings for her.
As soon as Diana finds the last missing page of The Book of Life, Gallowglass warns her to think carefully before she endangers herself. Of course, Diana reacts negatively to this seemingly controlling demand. However, he soon reveals that he’s seen her get frenzied like this before — like her first day attending Yale University — and knows that no matter what, she’ll eventually clear her head and persevere. Hearing this news shocks Diana, who was unaware that Gallowglass has been secretly watching her from her birth until the present day.
While this might not be surprising news to fans who’ve read the books that the hit fantasy series is based on, fans of the television series adaptation might be shocked to learn that Philippe — Matthew’s father — specifically asked Gallowglass to watch over Diana and ensure that she always ends up meeting and falling in love with his son, Matthew. While we don’t hear Philippe’s version of the story, Gallowglass confesses that he suspects he was tasked to do this because the wise vampire sensed how much he already loved Diana.
Diana is taken aback by the news, but ultimately thanks Gallowglass for sharing how he feels with her. Despite it being a fairly big revelation, the show quickly jumps into action — leaving Gallowglass in the lurch. The very pregnant Diana doesn’t get to dig more into this reveal as she follows her pursuit to find The Book of Life’s Daemon page. Although she does ultimately find it — thanks to Agatha Wilson’s help and guidance — her water breaks.
Gallowglass sticks around London long enough to hear Diana and Matthew’s children being born. But once both of their babies are safely delivered, Gallowglass hops on his motorcycle and jets off away from the new parents. From his perspective, his commitment to Philippe is finally fulfilled.
While it’s unclear whether or not Gallowglass will return to fight the battles to come in Season 3 — especially now that Diana has all of The Book of Life’s pages — A Discovery of Witches star Steven Cree hinted that he might during an interview with CBR. “One of Gallowglass’ greatest traits is he is loyal to the core,” he said.” I think that no matter what, we always find that with Gallowglass.”
