The upcoming conflict between the Avengers and the Eternals might have just been quietly spoiled by a story focusing on a minor hero’s future.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the story “American Eagle: Not Dead Yet” from Marvel Voices: Heritage #1, now on sale from Marvel Comics
The Marvel Universe is currently inching towards a number of important events. One of the most mysterious — and potentially significant — is the conflict teased to be building between the Avengers and another major Marvel force, the Eternals. But despite the potential global stakes of such a battle, a minor story focusing on a low-level member of the Avengers in the future might have spoiled the war’s outcome.
The story from Marvel Voices: Heritage #1 titled “American Eagle: Not Dead Yet” by Steven Paul Judd, David Cutler, Jose Marzan Jr, and Paris Alleyne quietly features a hint that the upcoming conflicts between the Avengers and the Eternals will end in victory for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The story “Not Dead Yet” takes place in the future of the Marvel Universe. Set in the year 2071, almost fifty years from the present day. In this period, American Eagle is still alive — albeit in a weaker state. As his powers have reduced in age, he’s become less likely to take to the battlefield. In flashbacks, it’s revealed that even into his older years, American Eagle continued to live and work at Avengers Mountain. Eventually, though, a Black Panther — potentially not even T’Challa but a successor to the role — asked him to take a step back from the roster.
The story is largely about American Eagle growing holder and becoming a different person in his later years, finally finding the resolve to save a young fan’s life. But the story also quietly suggests that the major events befalling the Avengers aren’t as serious as they may first appear. The Avengers is currently based out of Avengers Mountain — the body of a Celestial turned into a powerful headquarters. However, the Eternals hero Ajak recently discovered this, and was incredibly infuriated by this development. This set her up to wage war against the Avengers, setting up an upcoming major conflict between the Avengers and the Eternals. On top of this, the Avengers have been attacked by the multiversal Masters of Evil while at their base — which could result in the destruction of the Avengers Mountain.
All of this had suggested the Avengers might lose Avengers Mountain as their base, as they’re facing impossible odds to keep their current home operational. Losing Avengers Mountain would be a massive blow to the heroes, and could force the heroes on the run at a terrible time. The battle with the Eternals (which has been teased to also involve the X-Men in some capacity) especially seemed like the perfect chance to upend their base of operations. But American Eagle’s story suggests that the Avengers will continue to operate out of Avengers Mountain for years to come. This suggests the battle against the Eternals doesn’t end with the Avengers either destroyed by the immortal heroes or forced out of the Celestial corpse.
It’s entirely possible that “American Eagle: Not Dead Yet” could take place in an alternate timeline, and the Earth-616 Avengers/Eternals conflict could destroy Avengers Mountain. But many of the vignettes in the anthology Marvel Voices series have largely been suggested to be canon to Earth-616. If that carries over to the tale of the elder American Eagle, then it appears the Avengers have quite some more time to operate out of Avengers Mountain yet. If so, then Ajak’s mission to bring down the Avengers might be doomed before it can even begin.
