Thor: Which Hero Could Be Asgard’s Next Worthy Champion?

[ad_1]

Thor has lost his connection to Mjolnir and the hammer must find a new worthy person to become the hero of Asgard.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thor #15 by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matt Wilson & VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.

Thor finally admitted that he is no longer worthy of Mjolnir. Since the beginning of the 2020 Thor series, Thor has struggled to lift and control his hammer. Since becoming King of Asgard, Thor’s connection with the hammer has changed. He spent a long time trying to figure out why the hammer is broken. Recently, Thor’s hammer turned on him and pinned him to the ground. It also struck at Captain America on its own accord. After that, Thor admitted to Cap he was no longer “the spear of Asgard,” meaning he is no longer the one to wield the hammer.

If Thor will only play the role of king and not the hero leading the charge, who will? It could be a new character or one that fans are already familiar with. Over the last 15 issues, several characters have lifted the hammer besides Thor. Looking back, there are a few people who could have a fair shot of becoming Asgard’s next champion.

Beta Ray Bill has made a recent comeback in the comics. Appearing in several Thor comics and his own limited series, Bill would be an obvious choice to take over Mjolnir, especially since Thor broke Bill’s Odin-force weapon, Stormbreaker, when the two had a disagreement over Thor’s involvement with Galactus. It is well established that Bill is “worthy” and has used the hammer many times — even against Thor. Bill may finally play a more active role and remain in Asgard.

Loki throws Mjolnir

Interestingly, there have been a few more random characters picking up the hammer too. In Thor #7, Thor tossed Mjolnir down to Earth where a mechanic from Oklahoma named Adam Aziz picked it up and transformed into a version of Thor. When Iron Man arrived on the scene, he too was able to hold the hammer. He even went as far as to hit Thor with it. Tony Stark kept the exchange hidden from the general public but it was obvious that the hammer was searching for someone new.

A less obvious choice for the hammer would be Thor’s brother, Loki. Several times recently, Loki has been surprised by his ability to lift the hammer. While Mjolnir pinned Thor to the floor, Loki pulled it off with ease. Loki has become a much less devious character as of late. After the forces of Asgard defeated Thor’s former host, Donald Blake, Loki relinquished his title of “the god of lies” to Blake. As Loki said several times, he has”turned over a new leaf.” Now that Loki has stopped plotting for the thrown, it is plausible that he may be ready to have a leadership position in Asgard.

However, the comics could take a turn and build off of a fan-favorite scene from the MCU. In one of the most memorable scenes from Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers picked up Mjolnir and valiantly battled Thanos. Captain America has not been in the Thor story arc until the most recent issue. Thor went to him for counsel on his problem with the hammer. After their talk in the Avengers Mountain, the hammer remained on the table in front of Captain America. Thor could be setting up an Excalibur type of contest, where the first worthy person to lift the hammer gets the prize. Steve Rogers would be a worthy champion, and already beloved by the fans, but would he actually take such a position? It is not certain who will be the next one to hold Mjolnir but it seems many heroes might be interested in the job.
