Let’s break down why Ted Lasso won’t be the key to AFC Richmond’s promotion to the Premier League in Season 2 and who the real trump card is.
In Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, a lot has been attributed to Coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) being the heartbeat of AFC Richmond in the Premier League after they lost the love and soul for the game. Sadly, as much as he brought energy and warmth back to the side and got them ticking as a unit again, they got relegated. But while many think Ted’s the secret to success come Season 2, promotion actually depends on his assistant, Nathan (Nick Mohammed).
Now, let’s get one thing clear — Ted’s there for man management and pep talks. He does have crazy, wild plays from his football days that can be translated into soccer set pieces but Coach Beard, his first assistant, is the man running drills and strategies.
However, the person who got the tactics right was Nate, a lowly kit man at that point in time. But Ted spotted his potential and brought him into the fold as he knew the players, every blade of grass, and the histories of their rivals. This will be even more essential in the Championship where they need a local boy to map the domestic circuit for them and how to navigate this perilous terrain where underdogs will be hungry to scalp a big name like them.
The Americans can’t learn much from the mainstream media or YouTube on these lesser guns, so it’ll be Nate; a treasure trove for the English game, who will paint the tapestry to get back top. And most of all, as much as he knows the game, the players really back him too. He went from someone they made fun of to a genius they respect as he knows when to curse them out and when to motivate them with an inspirational speech — which is hilarious as he’s a quiet, shy guy. But his propensity to turn into a Hulk on a match-day is invaluable.
What’s also important is that he can call Ted out on bad ideas, as seen when Nate reamed the boss for not wanting to drop his aging captain, Roy. Nate, though, knows when tough decisions have to be made, and unlike Ted, he won’t be a people pleaser when it comes to what’s essential for the pitch.
Even in the transfer market, with new players possibly coming in and some to be sold, Nate’s the guy who really understands the landscape, which is what the club owner, Rebecca, knows and is happy with. With Roy damaged and out of the team and Nate officially contracted, they’ll rely a lot more on him as a trump card, and Ted honestly couldn’t be in better hands.
The Primetime Emmy Award-nominated Ted Lasso will return for Season 2, premiering on July 23 via Apple TV+. The series stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular coach, supported by Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt and Nick Mohammed.
