One minor part of the X-Men’s resurrection protocols that was just revealed on Krakoa could be the key to restoring the Scarlet Witch to full power.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Excalibur #22 by Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega & VC’s Ariana Maher, on sale now.
The Scarlet Witch, for a long time, was considered a mutant. While her mystical powers have deep connections to powerful entities in the Marvel Universe, it was believed that Wanda and her twin brother Pietro were actually the children of Magneto and that their powers originated from the X-Gene within their bodies for most of their existence. However, the events of AXIS revealed that Wanda and Pietro were in fact not related to Magneto by blood.
But if there’s an ounce of truth to this idea, the X-Men could already have a way to resurrect the Scarlet Witch following her death at the conclusion of the Hellfire Gala, thanks to a minor detail from Excalibur #22.
At the climax of the Hellfire Gala, Scarlet Witch arrived on Krakoa at Magneto’s request. Meeting in private, the Master of Magnetism revealed he still saw Scarlet Witch as his daughter and promised to improve her image within Krakoan culture. But the next morning, her body was discovered — seemingly strangled. The fact that an Avenger was just murdered on Krakoa presents a number of potential problems and paints the mutants in a terrible light, especially given many mutants’ negative views of the Scarlet Witch. Since Wanda is not presently a mutant, it’s unlikely that the Five, a group of mutants who can essentially resurrect the dead through cloned bodies, will be able to fully restore her as easily as they can with other mutants — and Cerebro will likely not have any recent data about her.
However, there’s a chance the mutants of Krakoa have missed something. In Excalibur #22, mutant secret agent Pete Wisdom revealed that it’s possible for the Cerebro technology that creates back-ups of mutant minds to back up the minds of people who the X-Men don’t realize are mutants. This came to light when Wisdom finds evidence that long-dead members of the S.T.R.I.K.E. Psi-Ops Division were actually mutants. Upon searching through the Cerebro archives, the Five were able to locate copies of their minds and memories, which allowed the Five to complete the resurrection process and restore them. This proves that the Five aren’t automatically able to tell who everyone cataloged within the Cerebro system really, even if their mutant minds have been backed up.
It’s possible that Cerebro did something similar with Scarlet Witch. When Scarlet Witch was considered a mutant not just by Magneto but by the world at large, it’s possible that the device took a recording of her mind and her memory, as it secretly did with all mutants over the years in secret. If Cerebro considered Wanda to be a mutant during at least one of its scans, that could mean that a copy of her personality may be stored within the machine, and a powerful enough telepath could place her mind back into a blank new body that the Five could create. This could allow Krakoa to revive Scarlet Witch and help them soothe tensions if not fully appease the likely enraged rest of the hero community. It would also be an easy way to retcon Scarlet Witch back into being a mutant since the resurrection protocols present a chance to change bodies in a number of ways.
This is something of a longshot concept, but it’s a possible one. There are potential roadblocks in this plan — including the chance that her magical nature could complicate the resurrection or that the Avengers decide she isn’t the same Wanda who was just killed — but it’s one possible way that Krakoa could bring the Scarlet Witch back to life and potentially save themselves a lot of trouble all across the universe.
