YouTuber and social media personality Logan Paul has broken the Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokémon Trading Card ever sold at a private auction after completing a trade worth a whopping $5,275,000. It’s perhaps the clearest sign we’ve ever seen that, yes, some folks do have more money than sense.
Paul purchased a promo ‘Pikachu Illustrator’ card on 22nd July, 2021 in Dubai, obtaining one of only 39 cards provided to contest winners back in 1998 and the only one in existence to be graded a 10 by the PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator).
It wasn’t the first time Paul obtained the coveted card, however. He previously purchased a grade 9 ‘Pikachu Illustrator’ card from collector Matt Allen in Italy. This same card was then traded for the grade 10 version in addition to $4 million in cash, making up the total worth of $5,275,000.
Logan Paul had this to say about the purchase:
“The Pikachu Illustrator is one of the rarest and most highly coveted Pokémon cards in the world. Only 39 were given out to Illustration contest winners in 1998, and this was a purchase for the only one in the world that has been graded a perfect 10.”
Paul decided to show off the card at his WWE debut at Wrestlemania 38 on April 2nd, because of course he did. The card could be seen in its PSA casing, hanging from a garish gold chain hanging around Paul’s neck. It was after the WWE bout that Paul was handed a certificate from Guinness World Records for the card’s purchase.
If it were us, we could perhaps think of a few more worthwhile things to spend $5 million on. But what about you? What do you make of Logan Paul’s recent purchase? Let us know in the comments below.
