Square Enix is looking to follow up the likes of Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy and Live A Live with more ‘HD-2D’ remakes, it has been revealed.
The report comes via Japanese publication Famitsu (thanks, VGC), which reveals that the developers of the upcoming Switch title Triangle Strategy have stated that Square Enix president Yosuka Matsuda wants to see more SNES games remade using the style, which fuses 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds to create a unique diorama effect.
Producer Tomoya Asano said:
The president ordered us to make more use of HD-2D, so we decided to think about remakes of past titles. So we lined up possible titles and thought about which could be done in HD-2D, and brought them to the president.
[The list included] titles released by Square and Enix for the Super Famicom – ones which were suitable for HD-2D, ones which were unsuitable for it, and ones which were impossible to play, like mahjong games.
We lined up all of them and made a presentation that Live A Live was the most suitable. The second place was ActRaiser.
Interestingly, ActRaiser has already been remade for Switch in the form of ActRaiser Renaissance, but it was created by external studio Sonic Powdered and does not adopt the HD-2D style.
