The Batman Star Equates Pattinson’s Performance as Bruce and Bats to Jekyll and Hyde

Discussing his co-star’s performance in The Batman, Andy Serkis likens Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Batman to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

According to The Batman star Andy Serkis, lead actor Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the duality between Bruce Wayne and Batman is reminiscent of the classic tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

While speaking with Total Film magazine, Serkis — who plays Bruce Wayne’s butler/father figure Alfred Pennyworth — spoke highly of Pattinson’s performance in The Batman. “I think Rob’s amazing as Bruce — and as Batman,” he said “He has this incredible range which allows him to play the vulnerability and the insularity of the character. He manages that so beautifully and subtly. And then when he goes into the guise of Batman, he’s incredibly tough and brutal. It’s a Jekyll-and-Hyde situation. He does it really gracefully and sensitively.”

Serkis refers to Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1886 novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The book follows Gabriel John Utterson, a lawyer who investigates the strange occurrences surrounding his good friend Dr. Henry Jekyll, a kind and well-respected doctor, and Edward Hyde, a misanthrope. Of course, Jekyll and Hyde are, in fact, one and the same, with Mr. Hyde being the physical manifestation of Dr. Jekyll’s evil alternate personality. Since the publication of Stevenson’s original novella over a century ago, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has been adapted or otherwise referenced countless times across various mediums.

In this analogy, it seems as though Alfred is Bruce’s own Gabriel Utterson. “[Alfred’s] watching, and he’s still trying to hold onto [Bruce], to try to stop him from disappearing down a rabbit hole at this point,” Serkis told Total Film. “I think he believes that he’s dangerous to himself, and it isn’t particularly well-formed as an idea. He can see that he’s heading towards trouble.”

Serkis previously spoke to the cold, distant relationship Alfred and Bruce have in The Batman. “Bruce is on this nihilistic journey, and they’ve pulled apart… It’s got to the point where they almost no longer talk,” the actor told Empire magazine back in December. “If they bump into each other in the corridor, it’s a very icy and painful greeting. They almost live in separate worlds now.”

In addition to Pattinson as Bruce/Batman and Serkis as Alfred, The Batman stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin and Barry Keoghan as Stanley Merkel, among others. The film follows the Dark Knight as he pursues the Riddler, a serial killer targeting Gotham City’s elite citizens. In the process, Bruce discovers dark secrets pertaining to the corruption in Gotham — and how it connects to his own family.
