Robert Pattinson Admits He Had No Idea Batman Was a Detective

The Batman star Robert Pattinson says that he didn’t know the Dark Knight was “the world’s greatest detective” until he started working on the film.

Robert Pattinson admitted that, before he started filming for The Batman, he had no idea that the Caped Crusader was considered a detective.

“And I feel like an idiot because I didn’t even know that Batman was ‘the world’s greatest detective’; I hadn’t heard that in my life before — but it really plays,” he said in an interview with GQ. “Just ’cause there’s a lot of stuff where he’s in amongst the cops. Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up. But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I don’t think have been in any of the other movies.”

In the same interview, Pattinson described the opening scene of The Batman as “jarring,” saying that the film differs from previous Batman stories, particularly other installments in Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe. According to Pattinson, it was always director Matt Reeves’ vision to do a “’70s noir detective story.” He said, “And I kind of assumed that meant the mood board or something, the look of it. But from the first shot, it’s, Oh, this actually is a detective story.”

The Batman has been described as a neo-noir crime thriller that will follow a younger Bruce Wayne, played by Pattinson, who is only in his second year of vigilantism. In a previous interview, Pattinson stated that the film will lean heavily into the character’s detective abilities.

“In the first meeting, [Reeves] was saying, we want to lean into the ‘world’s greatest detective aspect,’ and be a detective noir movie,” Pattinson said. “And, you know, normally when directors say that, they just do like a mood board, and it’s just about the imagery. But I read the script, and it is! It’s a detective movie. It happens all the time in the graphic novels, but it’s always kind of on the backburner in the movies.”

This is in line with previous comments made by Reeves in 2017, who said that the movie would focus on Batman’s detective skills. “I think there’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point of view driven in a very, very powerful way that is hopefully going to connect you to what’s going inside of his head, and inside of his heart,” he said.

The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022 and will subsequently be available on HBO Max on April 19, 46 days after its theatrical release.
