As Shang-Chi squares off against the Avengers, he decisively proves why he stands among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by taking down Thor singlehandedly.
As the Marvel Universe’s resident Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi has traded blows with some of the most powerful figures in the universe, showcasing his superhuman abilities after a lifetime of rigorous training. And when the Avengers come to confront Shang-Chi and his burgeoning, familial organization the Five Weapons Society, the Master of Kung Fu quickly reminds Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that he can not only hold his own against them but is even a formidable opponent for Thor as he showcases an electrifying transformation while battling the God of Thunder.
After coming to a misunderstanding over the location of the Cosmic Cube, the Avengers confront Shang-Chi directly at the base for the Five Weapon Society’s House of the Deadly Sabre just outside of Tokyo. While Shang-Chi assumed that he had handed over the Cube to his fellow heroes in an earlier encounter in Macau, the Avengers accuse their old friend of knowingly relinquishing a fake. And with Iron Man threatening to dismantle the Five Weapons Society by force unless the true Cube is given up, the battle is joined by the two factions in Shang-Chi #6, by Gene Luen Yang, Dike Ruan, Triona Farrell and VC’s Travis Lanham. Shang-Chi squares off alone against Thor when the God of Thunder unleashes his full Asgardian might and proves up to the challenge.
Stored inside of the House of the Deadly Sabre is a purported replica of the mythical Ten-Fist Sword belonging to Takemikazuchi, the Japanese God of Thunder and Blades. Shang-Chi’s half-brother and head of the House of the Deadly Sabre Takeshi reveals that this sword was forged by their father in an effort to channel Takemikazuhi’s legendary powers and, as the fight grows desperate, Shang-Chi claims the sword to transform into his own thunderous version of the Japanese deity to stop Thor’s rampage. And when Shang-Chi realizes this sword is actually the disguised Cosmic Cube, he ends the fight by making Thor’s trusty hammer Mjolnir melt in his hands.
This move marks another embarrassing moment for the self-proclaimed strongest Avenger, with Thor having a fairly rough time in the Marvel Universe as of late, usually stemming from his connection to Mjolnir. Previously, Moon Knight revealed he could command Mjolnir due to the mythical hammer being forged from lunar rock while Thor’s own connection to his longtime weapon has been faltering ever since he took the throne of Asgard. And given the Cosmic Cube’s omnipotent dominion over the conventional rules of space and time, it appears that not even Mjolnir is safe from being altered by a mere thought from those that possess the Cube.
With the revelation that Takeshi has been deceiving Shang-Chi and the rest of the Five Weapons Society all along, Shang-Chi willingly turns over his brother to the authorities while surrendering control of the Cosmic Cube to the Avengers as the situation is defused for now. And while the Cube was evidently used to restore Mjolnir as hostilities came to an end, this showdown certainly reminded Thor that Shang-Chi is more than capable of holding his own against him and that not even Thor’s hammer is safe from other weapons in the Marvel Universe. Shang-Chi’s divine ascension may have been a falsehood projected by the Cosmic Cube but Thor is definitely not the only God of Thunder out there.
