The Book of Boba Fett still can’t compete with Cobra Kai, despite moving up three spots on Nielsen’s streaming charts after its second episode.
The Book of Boba Fett may have risen in popularity since its premiere episode, but Cobra Kai still reigns supreme on streaming charts.
To analyze and report on what people in the United States are watching, Nielsen collects data and insights. Its list of top 10 streaming originals for the week of Jan. 3 included mostly Netflix originals; Book of Boba Fett (Disney+) and The Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime Video) were the only shows from other platforms to make the cut. Though Disney’s newest original Star Wars series rose to the No. 5 spot that week, it still couldn’t top Cobra Kai‘s over 2 billion watch minutes.
Nielsen’s list takes full watch time into account regardless of watchable minutes per show. Cobra Kai‘s four seasons total 40 available episodes, for example, while Book of Boba Fett had only released two of its seven planned episodes at the time. Cobra Kai had just released all 10 episodes of its new season the week prior, which likely contributed to its high viewership.
Disney+ may have upstaged Netflix in movie viewership in 2021, but according to Nielsen, Netflix is dominating original TV streaming so far in 2022. The Witcher took the No. 2 spot the first full week of January, followed by Stay Close at No. 3 and Queer Eye at No. 4. Emily in Paris and Ozark followed close behind Book of Boba Fett‘s 563 million viewed minutes.
Cobra Kai, which spins off of the Karate Kid films but takes place decades later, first debuted in 2018, and the Netflix series’ fourth season topped global charts in December 2021. Cobra Kai‘s fifth season is predicted to drop sometime in 2022.
The Book of Boba Fett premiered at the tail end of 2021, and Lucasfilm has not yet confirmed episodes of the series beyond its Season 1 finale “Chapter 7.” The show was originally marketed as another chapter in the story of The Mandalorian, and recent crossovers between the two shows imply Season 3 of the latter series will continue its larger narrative instead of setting up another Boba Fett chapter.
The Book of Boba Fett is streaming now on Disney+, and all four seasons of Cobra Kai are available on Netflix.
