Black Widow director Cate Shortland says it was her goal to make sure Natasha Romanoff’s experiences in the film spoke to all kinds of women.
Black Widow director Cate Shortland explained it was important to her that Natasha Romanoff’s experiences spoke to all types of women who might watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
“We cast our Widows from all across the world,” Shortland told The A.V. Club. “So we had African widows, French widows, Norwegian widows, Korean, Chinese, British. And I think, it was to talk to all women, you know? It was important.”
Shortland also revealed that showing Natasha’s vulnerable side was vital to getting viewers to care about the character, explaining, “If we see that she’s wounded, we actually feel what it takes to be a hero.” “If she’s Teflon coated and just wanders through a fight, there’s no grit,” the director continued. “I want to feel my heroes deserve to be loved.”
In regard to the action sequences featured in the film, Shortland said the fight scenes helped make Natasha more relatable to real women, including the ones in which she took a beating.
“I love when [Black Widow is] hit and gets back up because it’s a terrible, terrible thing. But I think it speaks to women and to people that have been victimized,” Shortland added. “It says, even if it’s a metaphorical hit, ‘Honey, you climb back out of that ditch and you walk right over the top of him and you keep going with your life.’ And I think it was important for me that that message was in the film.”
Shortland’s comments about Natasha come just days after the film’s lead, Scarlett Johansson, explained to Fatherly why she thinks Natasha is a good role model for young girls.
“One of her most admirable attributes is that she’s not afraid to admit when she’s wrong,” Johansson said. “She takes responsibility for things, particularly in this film. She’s really coming to terms with her past in a way that is very, very mindful, very thoughtful, and considerate and mindful.” The actor added that Black Widow is “someone who has a lot of respect for other people,” and that she “has a lot of integrity as a person.”
In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film is now in theaters and available on Disney+ Premier Access.
